Atheism is a relatively new development. The Romans and the Babylonians are well known to have fed Christians to the lions. These people had their own religions - the various cults and strains of Roman mythology and Sumerian mythology in the case of Babylon, I believe. They were pagan (non-Christian), not athiest. Big difference.

The polytheistic Romans fed early christians to lions for the perverse entertainment of the Roman crowds at the Coliseum and other arenas.
It was a show of power and royal disapproval for christianity sanctioned by the caesars, as they practiced against all enemies of the state, not just christians (who refused to worship Caesar).
Perhaps SOME Romans that were involved in the execution of these people may have been atheists, but the state's official religion held Caesar as a deified being worthy of worship, besides the Greco-Roman pantheon.
Roman "pagans" killed the christians.

You do not need an ancient history course to understand the truth behind your friend's statement. These things occur in present day. Look for example at a country like China, which is officially atheistic. Female babies are often unwanted and in many rural areas are eliminated. Have too many kids? They can take care of that for you too....and do.
Without a belief in God (by whatever name he may be called) , most people are left without a moral compass.

Romans were the people who fed Christians to the Lions, they weren't atheists. They had a whole Pantheon of Gods, led by Jupiter. They were polytheists but definitely not atheists.

The Ceasars, and other roman authorities under them were the ones that sent the early christians to the lions.
Were they believers of Zeus, Mars and the rest of the roman gods or were they atheists? I think some of they were atheists who do not beilieve in the gods of the roman religion or any other; other followed the roman religion and had their favorite God.

The Romans who had a whole pantheon of gods enjoyed watching the lions tear Christians limb from limb in their famous coliseums.

And left hungry lions might RIPPPPPP into their prey. Blood spraying.the team bubbled with exhilaration as all the animal chewed into and the human carcasses which flew around the globe as they have been dragged and products of them ripped off and chewed on. Oh such horror. wager lots of fellows held their candy women people who could no longer undergo to look. in basic terms like they do now for the time of horror movies as they protest seeing such horror.
