Seriously I think you are asking the impossible. The New York Times has done articles on hotel rooms, lilke what you can get for $99 a night (fleabags only, truly), or what you can get for $200 a night (not much). If you want to stay in a nice hotel for less I'd check out a New Jersey hotel that is near frequent bus service to New York on New Jersey transit, maybe even an airport hotel. Don't even expect fab for less than $350/night in Manhattan though. Then there is about a 15% tax on top of that.
