Snakes in a dream can have several meanings. They usually forewarn the dreamer of pending danger ahead, that the dreamer may be harmed in some way. Seeing a rattlesnake often indicates the passage of time.
According to one dream interpretation site, seeing a lone snake, and feeling threatened by it, means that you have a bad enemy who at that very moment is working against you. It can also mean harm by an enemy, be it physical or mental.
If the snake strikes, it may mean treachery or an attack by someone you least expect to be against you, like a family member, co-worker, or friend.
It can also mean challenges are ahead. Seeing a snake can also mean you have certain hidden fears that may surface at a later time. You never knew you were afraid of a certain item or event, but it will arise. Perhaps something you feared would happen sooner or later will finally surface and occur.

A snake in your dream usually has a bearing on what you personally feel about snakes. All dreaming is symbolic of something your unconscious mind is trying to communicate. It is important that when a dream disturbs you or is vividly remembered that you write it down, and then take each of the items that stand out in the dream and write what you associate with them. Some universal themes about snakes include: evil, satan, deceit, fear, curses, cunning, lying, foreign, disturbing, sinister, wise. What were the feelings that accompanied the dream symbols? you mentioned caution and fear. That often indicates your unconscious wants you to be careful about something. You may be deceiving yourself and not wanting to face something in your waking life. It may be a warning of people who are lying to you or using you or do not have your best interests at heart. The repetition of the snake symbol indicates the level of importance that your unconcious considers the message of the dream.

Snakes are hideous and fearful to most people. Snakes carry the ability to inflict pain and poison, thus the fear factor.
Your dream is very normal and should fade away, should you chose not to dwell on it. ( I suspect this to be the case)
However...If you are pursuing spiritual matters or spiritually attuned, then the meaning is clearly different. It is indeed a warning, a time for prayer, spiritual warfare, and sensitivity to doing things in your life that rob you of peace, things that are dark and sinful by nature.

Grass To see green grass in your dream, suggests that there is a part of yourself that you can always rely on. The dream is also symbolic of natural protection. Also consider the phrase "the grass is always greener on the other side." Do you always compare yourself with others and look at what other people have? To dream that you are planting grass, indicates that your hard work and efforts will pay off in the end. Swan To see a white swan in your dream, symbolizes grace, purity, beauty, dignity, wealth and prestige. To see a black swan in your dream, signifies mystery, and the unknown. Something is alluring, yet forbidden Animals To see animals in your dream, represents your own physical characteristic, primitive desires, and sexual nature, depending on the qualities of the particular animal. Animals symbolizes the untamed and uncivilized aspects of yourself. Thus, to dream that you are fighting with an animal signifies a hidden part of yourself that you are trying to reject and push back into your subconscious. Refer to the specific animal in your dream. To dream that animals can talk, represents superior knowledge. Its message is often some form of wisdom.? Alternatively, a talking animal denotes your potential to be all that you can be. To dream that you are saving the life of an animal, suggests that you are successfully acknowledging certain emotions and characteristics represented by the animal. The dream may also stem from feelings of inadequacy or being overwhelmed. If you are setting an animal free, then it indicates an expression and release of your own primal desires.
