You need to face the problem head on because ignoring it will only make it worse.
Firstly I'd sit down and look at all the money you have coming in and all the money you have going out. Then decide if you can afford your current repayments.
Right, if the answer is no then yo need some help.
I dont know your nationality but if you are English then go to the Citizens Advice Bureau (i am sure your country will have something similar).
What ever you do DO NOT PHONE UP ONE OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS WHO ADVERTISE ON THE TV AND IN NEWSPAPERS ETC. They all want to make money off you. The CAB is free and run by the government.
They will write to these companies on your behalf and sort out a repayment schedule for you.
Dont forget you are not alone in this situation and many many people have the same problems as you, it's not something o be embarrassed about.
Good luck x

We consolidated all our debts with our bank and got a Loan for just short of £8000 which paid off our debts and we were left with a little bit which we used to buy some, very much needed, new clothes and a day trip out (which we hadn't had for ages). Are you getting all the benefits you are entitled to eg Carers Allowance and is your husband getting DLA? You need to speak to someone at the CAB and they will advise which way is the best way for you. There is a way for the interest on some debts to be scrapped altogether so maybe this can be done for you. There is a light at the end of your tunnel, please have faith that there is. As for the companies phoning you - do you have Caller Display on your phone and also you can ask BT to block calls from "with-held" numbers. We have both of these facilities and they bring with them a certain amount of reassurance that you are in control of who and when you talk to the companies chasing you. Most companies are actually sympathetic if you explain to them your situation but it can be a daunting prospect sometimes. They have to abide by a Code of Practise for instances such as hardship but you have to let them know you are in hardship because if you try avoiding them they will think that you are trying to avoid your payments altogether. We have been exactly where you are and we felt the same way but we had very good advise from CAB and they were very efficient with it all. Good Luck. Btw, if you tell these companies that you only like to take calls at a certain time of day they will put it on computer so that no matter which operative calls you they will know not to call after a certain time. We don't have any calls after 5pm. You will get it sorted, we promise, but you need to be honest about how much you owe, both to the CAB....and to yourself. Best wishes xxx

You can change your number to an unsolicited number. I think it cost about $25 or so, but you can obtain some temporary peace. I have been here and boy can it become pressurized. Then I had to come to the conclusion that when you sign at the dotted line, you obligate yourself to the terms listed, and everybody wants to get paid. Maybe look into an organzation that helps you formulate a budget and negotiate with the companies you owe and start settling one debt at a time. Believe me, it won't just go away. Prayer always helps, and accepting responsibility for your choices gives you courage and helps you to grow up as well. Nobody puts a gun to our head and makes us take credit cards, it purely by choice. So to get out, we must assume all responsibility and start making better choices. It took me years to come to this conclusion. May you find peace and comfort knowing this too shall pass.

I have been in the same situation. Are you paying them at all or is it not possible to pay them? They can probably let you pay a small amount each month, as long as you are paying something they cant do anything and should have no reason to call you. Go to your local CAB office and explain what they are doing, if you are having trouble paying what they want you to pay then just tell them you simply cannot pay that much but are willing to arrange to pay half or less than what you pay.

If you explain to them you are having problems you will find that they will be quite sympathetic.

Also remember... you are far from alone.

If they're phoning because you owe them money they won't stop until you sort it out. You need to make an appointment to see your local citizens advice centre regarding debt management. They will be very sympathetic to your situation and have counsellors trained in debt management.

If after this you still feel depressed you should talk to your GP - you may need a little help to get back to normal. However the situation you're in is obviously a very stressful one so don't feel bad about being depressed.

Hope everything works out --good luck!

Are you saying that you have credit card collection company's calling? If this is the question the answer is to tell them to please stop calling . They HAVE to respect your request. This will not stop the mail but they cannot call you that is harassment. Call your local Job and Family Service office or Catholic Charities for Credit counseling. DO NOT use any of the advertised credit reducing companies please they are for profit and may even scam you or take your home

goto you local money advice centre, they wil act as a gobetween and get your debts sorted out... (its a free service run by the local authority)

and just unplugging the phone wotn work, they then start banging on the door...

you cant run away from debt.... nor can you avoid your obligations and responsibilities... so get your head out of the sand and deal with it... before you meet the bailiffs and when you see thier bill, you'll wish you had paid up...

if youre on benefit there is a legality, which protects you from being bled dry by credit card companies...

Credit card companies are the worlds worst for that.
I was in serious debt for a number of years, and it got to the stage where they phoned every day.
Once my house was sold, I was in a position to pay them all off, so I phoned MBNA, who I owed £16k to, who were the biggest creditor and pain in the wotsits, and gave them my debit card number for the whole amount.
They refused, only wanting the mininimum repayment.
I had to threaten suicide, which was easy to convince them anyway, and they finally took payment.
Disconnect the phone and seek out citizens advice, if you have it, or a debtline.
It will only get worse unless you can shake those monkeys off your back.
