hehe, this isn't a pet question, this is a ppl question. ah well.
my dog foxy would have conscious seizures after eating chocolate that would last up to 5 minutes. it's not good for their brains or digestive tract. as for training you dad, tell him that every time he feeds your dog chocolate, you'll key his car. it's about the same effect anyways, small damage at first, but it'll only get worse. a bit childish, but then, the only other option is to really freak at him, or take the dog and leave if he won't listen.

Chocolate:

Chocolate contains methylxanthine alkaloids in the form of theobromine and caffeine, that cause constriction of arteries, increased heart rate, and central nervous system stimulation. These effects can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and increased urinations. More advanced symptoms of toxicity include excitability, increased respirations and heartbeat, stiffness, seizures and exaggerated reflexes.

Certain types of chocolate contain higher amounts of methylxanthines, baking chocolate containing the highest and white chocolate containing the least. Dogs freely ingest toxic amounts of chocolate if it is left accessible. A potentially lethal dose in a 16 pound. dog is only one pound of milk chocolate and only about 2 oz of bakers chocolate.

Cardiac failure, seizures, coma, and death can result if the chocolate ingestion is not found within four to six hours and treated appropriately. The length of action of the methylxanthines is usually 12 to 36 hours. In dogs that chocolate ingestion is detected early, the prognosis is good.

I Would Have Given You The Website But It Will Only Take You To The Home Page And Not To The Part That Said This. Sorry.

Oh my goodness me how can your dad be so irresponsible and disrespect your dogs health like this as well as your feelings. You are quite right, chocolate made for HUMANS is toxic to dogs....in some cases just a small amount has been known to KILL a dog.The naturally occurring theobromine found in chocolate, cocoa beans, cocoa bean hulls, cola, and tea, is responsible for the poisoning effect in dogs. Dogs are unable to metabolize this element quickly enough to prevent poisoning. Try printing off some info from a web site ( www.dogownersdigest.com) or frog march your father to the local vet to get it confirmed from a 'professional'. Sorry but your father and other like minded people who insist that our chocolate is okay for dogs need a good kick up the bum! Have you tried buying some doggy chocolate drops and asking your dad to feed the dog these as an alternative??

Can't help you with retraining your dad, unfortunately. LOL. However, chocolate is poisonous to dogs, and the amount, depending on size, could be deadly. Antifreeze is deadly to animals, too, but they drink it cause it smells sweet.

You might try training your dog not to take any kind of treat from anyone but yourself. That will probably help. Your dad would probably get the message that way. Or just keep your dog away from your dad.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, sweetie, but I honestly wish you luck.

Have your dad check out these sites:
http://www.talktothevet.com/ARTICLES/DOGS/chocolatetoxic.HTM
http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/nutritiondogs/a/chocolatetoxici.htm
http://www.baringvet.net/chocolate.htm
http://www.dogownersdigest.com/news/library/chocolate-dog-poisoning.shtml
http://tafkac.org/animals/chocolate_and_dogs.html
Your dad needs to realize, that if he keeps giving your dog Chocolate, he is doing more damage than good and can kill your dog, if he doesn't stop! If these sites don't convince him, maybe talking to an actual Veterinarian will. Your dad also needs to stop being so selfish and cruel!

Here is a suggestion. Find a treat that your dog really loves. Then buy some and give them to your father to give the dog. From that point on he would be the only one to give that treat to the dog.

He can save his chocolates for himself, and always have the new treat to give. He'll still get the attention he is seeking -- and you get a healthier dog.

Chocolate is POISON to a dog! Tell your dad you are going to hide his chocolate from him if he doesn't stop feeding it to your dog. They say just a couple hershey kisses can kill a chihuahua, while it may take a whole pack to kill a Lab.Dogs cannot digest chocolate, and some may become violently ill and vomit it back up.Your dad needs to be given a can of healthier treats to offer your dog by his chair.Good luck in retraining your dad!LOL

Not much you can do. I have a nephew whose vet told him milk chocolate was ok for dogs so the nephew gives his dogs chocolate all the time.

I refuse to let anybody gve mine any form of chocolate....so unless you are on your own and pay the vet bills yourself, there is not much you aregoing to be able to do to change his mind I am afraid.

dogs and puppies have not got the means as we people do to digest an elementary chemical recent in chocolate stated as "Theobromine". whilst theobromine is ingested via an animal it impacts are poor on the powerful traumatic device and the cardiovascular device. This consequence of the chemical has an exceedingly harsh consequence on the animal’s physique inflicting intense trauma and in many circumstances dying. in the adventure that your 50-pound dogs gets his paws on a single chocolate-chip cookie, it probable won't reason him intense issues. even with the shown fact that, if he gobbles up extra – a pan of brownies, say – he could strengthen vomiting or diarrhea. as quickly as poisonous levels are reached, the stimulants kick in, and it fairly is once you extremely could trouble. indications comprise: restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, extra advantageous urination and/or intense panting. in the adventure that your puppy isn't dealt with, he could desire to flow right into a seizure – probable even die. Hi ya, we had a german shep who loved chocolate, she once ate a box of milk tray and 1 block of dairy milk, this was what she knicked when we werent looking, however she would have small amounts and she lived til she was 16, which is a fab age for a german shep. The dog i have now is a german shep cross collie (alegely) he has very strong german shep traits, including a liking for choc - which i am sure he got off our old girl. he has no ill effects if he has small amounts of choc. we dont give him lots but if i have some he has a small square and loves it. I would say just keep an eye out for ill effects but as i say i think our 16 year old speaks for herself really. it is intially up to you if you give it or not but i recon a little bit of something wont hurt. oh and mine loves kebab meat!!!! good luck.
