I'm a vegetarian too & we keep mice & rats as pets so I know how cute & smart they are. However, it is true that wild mice & rats can cause problems if they're in your house. They can chew through wiring, which can be inconvenient & costly, not to mention dangerous. Also, even though it may not be probable, there is a possibility of disease either from the rodents themselves or (more likely) from lice or other parasites they may carry. Of course there's the issue of mouse poop everywhere too.
If we had wild mice or rats coming inside, I'd get some humane traps & set the little guys free someplace well off the property. Also, I'd make sure all the cereal & other food was in secure containers instead of boxes or whatever. The idea of poisons & glue traps makes me cringe. Maybe you could negotiate with your dad about this. Good luck!

I agree with the live traps, which you can find at Wal-Mart and Tractor Supply Company for around $10. Place them against walls, since mice most often travel along them. I would target the kitchen and bathroom, both water sources. Also, ask him to find out how they're getting inside, check the outside of the house carefully. This time of year, they try to get indoors and they can squeeze through really tight openings. Tell him having dead mice scattered about the house isn't any better. That might make him change his mind. Good luck.

Try talking your parents into getting live traps and finding a place to let them go far away from your home. I think both of these things are mean, and the fact I have a pet gerbil doesnt help when you see something that looks like it drowning and suffocating in a glue trap.
I know you can get them at the walmart here. If you got a way of getting money get a few of the traps yourself, if you dont then try talking them into it, it would be cheaper to get a live reusable trap then to keep bying posion and glue traps since this things can only be used once. And the mice wont die and stink up your house if you let them go. If you use posion they die and rot in the walls, making the hme stinks.... trust me I know.

You are not as informed as you might think. Deer mice can carry the hunta (probably not spelt correctly) virus which is fatal to humans. It is an airborne virus and it is not the mice themselves but their feces that carry this virus. And we all know what mice do best. Cleaning up after them is all that it takes to get infected and die. A woman in my area died 2 years ago, sweeping out her garage where she had mice, left behind a couple kids.
In any case you can buy electronic devices these days that emit a sound wave (we can't hear it). It affects the mices nervous system and they will leave the area. It is not harmful to other pets, just rodents. It does not kill them or harm them it just irritates them. They cost about $20 - $30 and will last about 1 - 2 years. Very humane.
Oh yeah, a hardware store is probably the best place to find them.

Agreed with Kelsey--if you have the money and time, you can get a Havahart trap and release them farther away from the house. Otherwise, the most humane way of killing them is with a snap trap (poison and glue traps offer a slow and painful death--and glue traps can be incredibly messy. I've heard of mice/rats dragging them off and dying from starvation in corners, or chewing their own legs off to escape.)

Offer to make a humane trap. All you have to do is get some sort of bucket/aquarium (doesn't really matter as long as it can hold water), a stick, a bottle, penut butter, and a piece of wood for a ramp.
-Put about 2 inches of water in your enclosure.
-Put the bottle on the stick and tape the stick across the enclosure. Be sure the bottle can rotate freely.
-Put the ramp so that it leads up to the stick from the floor.
-Put some penut butter on the bottle.
The mouse/rat will smell the penut butter and go to find it. It will climb the ramp, go across the stick, then once on the bottle it will rotate and the mouse will be caught. The water in the bottom will keep it from jumping out and whenever you see you caught one take it outside a little ways from your house and release it.

OK look, I’m a HUGE animal lover too and I have owned many mice before but there IS a difference between wild mice and domesticated ones. Wild mice carry all sorts of disease and bacteria, It aint nice. Domesticated mice on the other hand are free of diseases and they are kept in a cage which prevents them from nesting in your house and chewing cables, which is a fire hazard. I know how you feel, I love all rodents and mice particularly are very cute, but you should not have wild mice in your home period, its just standard safety.

Domestic (pet) mice / rats are a VERY far cry from the nasty beasts that invade our homes and buildings. The bodies and feces of these wild critters carry many more disease pathogens then you can relate to ......
All you can do is tell your dad how you feel and let it go at that. Once you have your own place, then you can do as you wish.... but until that day you have to follow the house rules.
PS,,, It is amazing how many {young / teenage} righteous vegans/vegetarians change their minds on how they stand on the subject, once they are fully responsible for paying all their own bills, including food, transportation, medical and home maintenance.

I think the best solution to your problem is to tell your parents how you feel and maybe both of you can find a better solution to the rat problem.(there are probably possible ways to get rid of mice without really killing them )
