I was driving my 1997 Jetta GT at 75mph on the Interstate. All of a sudden, it downshifted into the lowest gear possible. Needless to say, the engine RPM's redlined and the car slowed down quickly. I got off the road and smelled transmission fluid. I saw a small amount under the car on the pavement. I tried to put the car in "D". It would not move but I could hear some "clunking noises" like it was trying to go into gear. Reverse was the same way.
Has anyone heard of this type of problem before? I appreciate any comments or suggestions...
Thank you, Victoria

I agree with Doug. This problem could be from several problems none of which are easy to fix. Take it to a reputable mechanic or one you know and trust. Transmission problems are one of the easiest areas for a mechanic to cheat you out of money. Also your driving a disaster waiting to happen, for years VW has been almost at the bottom of the reliability list and are not made to last. The best thing you could do would be to look into getting another car.

What do you want to do? Fix it? Lady - this is definately a job for the garage (and by the sound of it, a rather expensive one too).

(My Jetta is an -88 and still running like a .... well something noisy, smelly and ugly).
