know people in comas get fed through IVs, but what happens when they have to go to the bathroom?...and, what about females when they have their period? And, how would they stay clean? Do nurses carry them to the bathtub and clean them? Just curious...

Comatose patients are either fed via IV Hyperalimentation or NG ( naso-gastric tube) ; GT( gastrotomy tube) or JT (Jejunostomy tube ) tube feeding. For their elimination needs, a foley catheter is in place for urine. They are usually laid over a pad or bedliner; so when they make #2; they have to be clean.

A good buttocks care is impt either by soap and water or some TLC cleanser to prevent bedsores. For the female patients, a perenial pad is provided when they have their periods. With bathing, it's usually done in the bedcalled sponge baths with soap, basin and lots of towels.

Good hygiene and skincare is very impt for these patients to prevent bedsores and eliminate odors. . Also by turning them frequently from side to side is impt to prevent common lung complications such as Pneumonia and atelectasis.
