I have the same problem with many customers from my shop who have bought muzzles and this tip works every time.

Currently dog thinks this is a punishment and hates it - you need to retrain him to love it...easy.... :)
1- Put on the muzzle and wait a few seconds - then take it off say GOOD BOY - give the dog a fabulous treat right away - something thay willl adore so it makes a BIG impression. ....

2 - Repeat every day several times. Try to extend the period between placing the muzzle on the dog and removing it. Always give the treat and say good boy.... the dog will associate the muzzle with receiving a reward. This makes the muzzle good. Eventually he will see it and think of a treat so welcome it.

My customers always use this method and so far so good :D Goodluck

That stinks for your dog and you, make sure you are using a very comfortable muzzle and one that allows him to pant and drink, if he must wear it all the time, but you will need to train him to accept it, start by feeding him treats when you put in on, and then take it right back off, repeat this at least a dozen or so times per day increasing the time that you leave it on each time, (to his comfort level), be sure to remove it before he gets a chance to try to get it off, you may just have to only show it to him the first few times and it may be a day or more before you can get it on him and actually buckled (I'm assuming that you only need to put in on him in public), go slow and steady, it'll be a pain for a week or so, but then the work will be done and you won't have to feel bad for him when you put the muzzle on. Best of luck.

That is a common behavior of a dog who isn't used to a muzzle, halti training head collar, or other item they aren't used to.

If he's ripping his face apart, he needs to have his claws trimmed.

To get him to stop trying to claw off the muzzle, he needs to wear it (or something that is similar, such as the Halti headcollar) until he becomes used to it. The halti or other training headcollars, have a similar feel without restricting the dog's ability to drink. I don't know what style of muzzle you have for your dog, the "cage" style muzzles do allow a dog to drink and there is a style of muzzle that is sometimes used in police dog training to keep a dog from becoming "sleeve happy", that allows a dog to open his jaws somewhat but yet be unable to bite anybody. Those styles can be worn by a dog for longer periods of time so that dogs get used to having them on. Those styles also allow a dog to pant.

If you have a muzzle that doesn't allow your dog to pant, be very careful about taking him out in warm weather, because the only way a dog can cool himself is by panting, and if he gets hot and can't pant, the dog can easily become dangerously overheated.

They have to LEARN to wear a muzzle. start holding it over his nose for ONE second, "good boy". Then stick it on for 30 seconds - all the while hugging him scratching his ears and keeping him too distracted with soaking up all the loving to fight the muzzle. Work up time slowly always with a distraction (preferadly fun) to keep his mind off the muzzle

move to australia.. nah.. get him used to it when he is at home.. praise him for wearing it. maybe get a looser muzzle to wear when he is at home.. it is like teaching a cold backed horse to wear a saddle.. keep at it and he will soon learn that it isnt that bad to have the muzzel on.
