just to make this short, im writing story, it involves a police department, when you walk in, what do you see? do you just see a desk clerk or do you walk in and see like a bunch of people at cubicals, somebody tell me?

There should be a desk. Approach the first person you see.

That will vary widely by department. A small town sheriff's department will be a world different than a precinct in the NYPD.

Did you consider going to a police station and looking around?

Depends.

Heres one example.

A bunch of semi-comfortable seats bolted to the floor in about 3 or 4 rows. A ticket dispenser. A number display on the wall. Sometimes a TV for those waiting. A bunch crime prevention and other crap pamphlets on display.
2 walls of concrete half way up and 4 inch lexan the rest of the way. A couple cops behind each wall of glass. A window for auto reports, a window for requesting other reports, 2 windows for making reports.

You can't write what you don't know. Go to a few police stations, check them out. There's no "model" police department architecture.
