I like the idea of teasing your hair but I don't know how to. People say you need plenty of hairspray but can you tease your hair without hairspray but with gel or moose or something? No silly answers please or you will get a thumbs down.

Teasing your hair is a very simple process. However, it does depend on your current hair cut.
Hair with lots of layers cut into it helps because, after you back-comb it, the layers help the hair to stand up and give it that 'big hair' look.

You can see there are lots of layers which help with the teasing process. However, it is possible without but it really does help and the end result is much better.

Teasing your hair is easier if you use hairspray, and it'll stay 'messed up' for longer.
I suggest that, next time you go out shopping, to buy a few big bottles of cheap hairspray and that'll do the trick.

It IS possible without it, though.
Make sure your hair is completely dry, and straighten the ends if possible. If you have any hair wax/clay/putty, then rub some between your fingers and work it through your hair. This is normally the first step for teasing your hair.

Take a fine comb and lift up some of the hair at the crown of your head. With your comb, gently brush your hair *downwards* towards your head and then out. Repeat the process and your hair will become quite tangled.
(At this stage, you would spray the now 'tangled' section with hairspray).

Then simply repeat this process over and over again on the necessary points of your head. Go for the 'scene' rather than 'eighties' look, so you don't look like you've just walked out of 'Dirty Dancing'.

It's quite difficult to explain, and much easier to watch.
Here's a written, step by step guide on how to tease your hair PLUS a video (at the bottom of the page!)
I advice that you give it a read and a watch, and have a go yourself.

I dont know about the gel/mousse part, but I do know that the best way to tease your hair is to use a tailcomb (one of those tinier combs that have a long, skinny end which is usually used for parting your hair) and, taking about 1 inch sections one at a time, start backcombing the sections. So instead of combing the way you usually would, go in the reverse (preferrably in a relatively quick motion). Depending on how big you want your hair to be, that will determine just how much you have to tease. After that's all done, set it with some hairspray.

take sections of hair and put a little hairspray, gel, mousse which ever. then take a comb but instead oif combing down the normal way, comb upwards. it makes the hair look rough and a bad head look. its not healthy for your hair though so dont do it too often!

Take a thin section of hair, hold it straight up or out, run a fine tooth comb inward or downward.

Hair mousse will help create some grip. Hairspray will provide hold.

Put gel or mouse in your hair. Wait until your hair is still a little wet but almost dry. Then hold up a chunk and comb it backwards. Do this to all the chunks all over your head and you will have the totally 80's hairstyle.

Wow, if you want to try teasing your hair the procedure is quite easy... raise enough hair then comb it slowly up and down each time until it accumulates. Then comb your hair-top slowly down to your back to become bulky and beer-spray neatly. It will soon become dry and hard.
