Okay, so I want to compress DVD mpeg-2 content into divx avi. I do not want to lose any quality, but I want to have it as compressed as possible.

Sure, i could set it at 10,000 kbps, but that would be a waste of space. or i could set it at 400kbps, but that would murder the quality of the video. No, what i want is the least possible bitrate that maintains full quality.

A typical DVD is about 6 Mbits/s. Assuming Divx is twice as good as MPEG-2, I would use around 2-3 Mbits/s.

Divx will do this automatically depending on the settings on Home theater the max resolution is 720 on the high def setting it is 1280 or 1920. If you set this to a portable setting, than it will differ.
