We are going to be visiting Cali soon at a resort in Escondido. We have maped out some sites we want to see because we have never been. We are very excited to see L A but I've heard about traffic being attrocious.

We plan to spend an entire day in LA; so how realistic is it for us to be able to actually drive to LA from Escondido in 2 hrs like the map says?

What are the busiest times for traffic?

If you are driving to La from Escondido in the morning, even during rush hour, you will be fine b/c you're going the opposite commute direction. Most traffic in Escondido in the morning is heading south towards San Diego. Then on your way back I would wait until 7pm or later to go b/c you might have to deal with Orange or Riverside County traffic if you try to leave around 5pm. So if you left Escondido say around 8am or 9am you won't have traffic in SD and by the time you get to Orange County and LA the moring rush should be over and traffic should not be as bad.

When traveling to LA from Escondido do not take the 15 to the 91 freeway; the 91 freeway is a parking lot eastbound in the morning and one of the worst freeways in the state. Take 15 to 10 or the 60. Or take the 78 freeway in Escondido to the 5 freeway north to LA/OC.

The traffic changes everything. Sure, you can get from Escondido to LA in about 3 hours (not 2) if there is no traffic. But there always is. There is no good time for traffic because every hour is rush hour. I'd skip the LA trip this time and make it another vacation in itself, where you stay in a hotel in LA so you don't have to put up with so much traffic. Escondido is close to a lot of cool stuff, like Legoland, San Diego and Sea World and the Wild Animal Park. Plus there are the beaches that are about an hour away from Escondio that you can enjoy. If you waste a day going to LA, you will spend the majority of it in traffic. Stay local and you will have a lot better of a time.

I live in LA and yesterday drove down to almost Escondido and made it in under 2 hours. If there is 2 or more in the car, use the car pool lane, traffic flows better. Early morning and late afternoon are the busiest time.

People from California or SoCal (not Cali) know the traffic is a beast. We have grown to accept this fact. So try to go in the non-rush our traffic times and it might be a little better. Rush hour is from 6:45am to about 9:30am and 3:45:pm to 6:30pm

If you left at 9 or 10 am it is not unreasonable to expect to be in Los Angeles by around 12 noon.

If you travel on Saturday you could make it. If during the week you need to leave after 9am.
