Read up on the founding of the American continent. Most groups who came here in the early days were victims of religious persecution back in Europe. The Constitution was framed to prevent such injustices occuring at the hands of the new government.

Despite the fact most of the writers were Christians, by Christians I'm using it as a blanket term, they wanted to separate church and state. They did this because most again were from England where the King was the head of the church and the government and they wanted it to be clear this was not going to be the case in America.
