you know how you can blow out a speaker by playing a song too loud, by the same token, can you blow out a microphone on a digital camera or some recording device by recording something too loud?

I would say that you can, but it would be difficult to do it...
A condenser mic is more delicate that a dynamic as a rule and I reckon you could more easily damage the diaphragm on a condenser, but as a rule, when used normally this would not be an issue...
The speaker cone and the microphone diaphragm do similar jobs and are probably the area most likely to be damaged.
If you have damaged a mic, it's more likely that it has been incorrectly connected rather than damage through being too close to a sound source. For example, you could damage a condenser mic, by putting it too close to a kick drum with no SPL filtering, but a dynamic would just take it in it's stride...
Check that the resistance (ohms) of your camera input and your microphone are compatible

Absolutely. I've burned-out several mics: prolonged exposure to excessive volume or dynamic range.
