I suggest going to a GOOD hairdresser and asking her opinion before you decide. They may need to just clip your ends a little more to get you back on track. I have lots of friends that don't like paying someone to do their hair...and this is what happens. I don't know your situation but I recommend at least going for your relaxers and/or deep conditionings. I used to put my own in and I ended up having to cut ALL of my hair off, it's grown back now since I started taking better care of it.
There is a book I read on taking care of our hair called "Beautiful Black Hair" by Shamboosie. He offers LOTS of suggestions on getting your hair back in shape and since I've been using these methods for the past 5 months I have seen great results. I use Nexxus products he suggests with really good results.
You might want to look into a good daily moisturizer and make sure your scalp is oiled regularly. I don't do grease on my scalp so the products I've been using are Luster's Pink conditioning hairdress daily and Isoplus hair & scalp treatment every 4-5 days for oil.
It's almost trial and error you have to find what works for you, hope this helps!

I would wait and see what your hairdresser advises. Once ends are damaged, they can't be repaired, so taking them off seems wisest, but it would be a good idea to have the hairdresser do it for you before she treats your hair in another way. Most important is to keep the ends well moisturized, once the damage is removed--best are natural products such as plain olive or coconut oils. The majority of hair products which claim to moisturize your hair are based on mineral oils and contain alcohol which in fact dry it out! Hairdressers will not necessarily tell you this because they have products to sell, however.

Even healthy hair like mine get split ends, due to normal hair brushing & styling. If my hair is healthy, just imagine what hair that's been straightened, permed, dyed does to hair? It causes split ends 5x more than healthy hairs. No matter what hair product you use, there will be split ends. Spend 5-10 mins. trimming your hair strand per strand, section by section when the sun is shinning so you'll understand how the hair is split in several places, and not always at the same length. Do it yourself trim, is the best. Use a 2" folding shears for trimming. I trim my hair 1" a month, 4" 2x a year, and since 2003, it had gotten longer & longer. If you have curly hair, finger comb is best. I've responded to your other question.

You can treat your hair with a condition treatment which will treat your ends that are breaking and it will actually strenghten the rest of your hair to prevent future end damage. Your ends are getting damaged from the everyday stress you put your hair through. straightening, coloring, ironing, all damage your hair and we do this everyday to look beautiful and this all damages the ends. Another thing to try is to put as less stress to that area so the ends can strengthen. Leave in treatments are also a good way to hydrate and nourish the ends that are so brittle.

Yeah I think you need a good cut....Sally Beauty Supply has an ethnic section......you will be amazed at what you will find as far as anti frizz and conditioning treatments go....stay and read for a while find the products that will work for you....I am thinking maybe you did a perm and this is causing the damage....there for look for a milder perm for your hair....not all black is the same you may have fine hair and the products you have been using is for coarser hair.....

Your hairdresser is your best solution for your hair.
She would be a better person to ask advice
that the people out here.
She can actually look at your hair,
they can only guess.
If you were having a pain in your chest
& down your arm,
PLEASE TELL me you wouldn't trust these
"Yahoos'" opinions
with something as
important as your health.
And the same goes for your hair.

Yes, cut them off. Nothing worse than shabby ends and everone can tell. You won't lose that much in length. And most importantly, clipping the ends will make it grow back faster and it will look better.
