1. What is the average price for a .45 or 9 MM new or used?

2. And is there much of a cost difference for ammo with either gun?

3. I live in CA, so will I require any permits or something to purchase a hand gun?

The Springfield Armory XDs I bought both 9mm and .45acp were about $580 after taxes and out the door. I live in Cook County IL so it will be a little higher by me. My 9mm Beretta Px4 Storm was $550. Rugers can cost between 450 and 550. Taurus about the same
Ammo prices at Walmart
9mm 15.96
.45acp 26.96
Both are winchester brand.
As for CA law and requirements you will have to ask a local gun shop or do some looking online...
Hope it helps.

Average price for a .9mm (or .45) is between $400 to $500 used and $600 to over a thousand new. Expect to pay a bit more for the .45 especially in the used gun market. New guns in the same make n models will be the same as it doesn't cost anymore to make a 1911 in .45 than it does in .9mm. Ammo for the .45 acp will be slightly higher but you can usually get good deals on practice ammo for either one. Note: You won't have trouble finding ammo for either caliber.

Can't tell you about Calif. since I live in Texas.

Best.

Just like they've said already, it's going to be whatever you want to spend. A 'Saturday Night Special' throwaway might be as low as $80 or so, while a good H&K can set you back up to $2000. Your call. 9mm is usually cheaper than .45ACP if you're buying in quantity. Remington UMC is a good deal, and their big case of 9mm Luger is almost half the price of the same size case of .45ACP. Of course, the .45ACP is a larger and more powerful round, and you'll likely use fewer rounds, so overall the price will balance out.

As far as the California laws go, you will need to get a permit to carry, which may require you to take a safety course as well as have an extensive background check. You'll also need to prevent children from gaining access to any guns. California also now requires lab testing of all firearms for safety/function. You may also be required to prove that you have a safe storage device. Magazines or ammunition feeding devices over ten rounds are prohibited.

1) That is a wide open question. Cost for either caliber could be as low as $100.00 for a piece of junk to well over $1000.00 for a top of the line pistol. Typically you will get what you pay for.

2) There is a huge difference in the cost of ammo. The link below is to Midway USA. That site will give you a basis for comparison. Remember to compare apples to apples.

Have fun and be safe.

3) Check with local law or your gun shop about the current permit requirements.

For your use & purpose you need nothing less than a 357 Magnum or 45 acp.* I prefer the 357 Magnum because you get two(2) guns for the price of one & can shoot 38 caliber ammo in a 357 Magnum also. Forget about the 9mm altogether.* Buy used & save $$$$.* A new one doesn't shoot any better than a used one.*Check with the Sheriffs Dept. about permits.*

If you're buying a new/used 9mm I suggest looking into the H&K line.
Can't say enough good about these guns.
Check out Shotgun News for the best prices and there are whole sections in that magazine dedicated to rules and regulations for your State.
Oh! The cost of ammo is the same for each - the price changes depending on the brand of shell and the type (of which there are many)...
Best of luck.
I have a P7 M13 and I wouldn't trade it for the world!
:)
Good Luck!
