They've specifically said NO they are not doing that. They are not at this point looking to put ANY bases in africa, just the new AFRICOM regional command structure based in Germany. Liberia has offered to host the AFRICOM HQ, but that wasn't accepted. South Africa has criticized the creation of the command at all, so certainly they aren't going to offer a base for it to operate from.

There are currently 1500 US troops in East Africa on a French base & no plans to add thre or elsewhere. If anything, they'd put a naval base in that (east coast/horn) area to help cover the Indian ocean & entrances to the Red Sea & Pursian Gulf. Or, very far in the future they might look at something in West Africa (where the oil is) in hopes of stabalizing the region, but I very highly doubt it.

In general, the US is pulling most of our foreign based troops back to the US - why give a huge economic benefit to a foreign community when you can keep it at home & quickly transport your forces anywhere in the world. So, I'm going with "no" there won't be a base in SA.

I do not think this will improve stability, there is a growing Islamic militant movement in South Africa and this will stir up tensions and give the militants another target, they have already gone for US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. It will bring a little prosperity to the region by creating civilian jobs and bringing money into the local economy. Who knows, maybe it will work out OK. Fingers crossed

It was much more stable under British rule and later (though unfairly) independent apartheid, this is just another way of the US taking over control of the state while leaving the responsibility for running the show to the local political thugs that will soon fall under the spell of another Mugabe or Idi Amin.

i think of somebody stated this already yet...the place did you get this? the place are those bases you're conversing approximately? The Coalition does have bases...on former Iraqi ones. those however have not yet been marked as everlasting. yet inspite of the effects please understand that the usa nevertheless won't be able to build any everlasting bases in Iraq till the government of Iraq facilitates them to (each and all the usa bases on distant places soil have been approved with the help of the host governments).

We have no such intention. We have created Africa Command. A specified command like Pacific Command, Central Command, etc. The headquarters of Africa Command is in Germany.

i don't know about the stability of the region but US will have numerous bases all over Africa starting with friendly countries. US lacked hegemony in middle east and Africa....with war in Iraq (thanks to bush) we now have regional hegemony in middle east (regardless of the outcome of the war).....and the only part of the world where we don't have a hegemony is Africa. thats where china and US will collide since china too is going after Africa....if we get regional hegemony in Africa then the neo-con's expectations of global hegemony will be fulfilled.

Gee, I don't know, I thought South Africa was supposedly the most stable country on that continent. If they really cared, why not try for a base in West Africa? That place is always in shambles!

It would be a good refueling / resupply point for Navy ship from the east coast coming into the Indian Ocean.
