Unless you want to go the budget route, I think you'll need a fair amount more than what the other answers suggested. It can easily cost you $20-$30 a night in a bar for just you, much less for two people depending on where you go and what you're drinking. A $30 a night hotel won't be much, adequate at best. And unless you plan on eating nothing but street food, even the cheapest restaurants will be $5-$8 for two people and easily $10-$20 for two at a place that's somewhat nice. I would say at least $75 a day to not have to go the budget backpacker route for the two of you and be able to go to some fairly nice places once in awhile.

Depending on what type of hotel you choose you will not need more than about 1,000bhts a day but you can do it on less, but you will need a few quid if you go to the shopping mall and markets. You will not be able to resist the goodies they have on offer.I myself have been visiting Thailand for over 25 years and the place never ceases to amaze me.Just being there with the sights and the sounds and the smell of the delicious food and the wonderful people that you meet there are simply heaven. Go and enjoy this wonderful experience and you will never want to leave the place - I guarantee that!

If you're staying in a budget hotel 3Stars you can probably get a decent place at about $20 a night. Food is really cheap is you can eat like the locals (bowl of noodles is only 60cents) ... I would say spending about $30 a day incl hotel would be ok. About $400 - $500 would include 1 or 2 great clubbing nites.
Cheers

i too have to disagree a little with some of the estimates for money required. hotels can be quite cheap, but for 2 meals a day ( if breakfast is included at hotel) plus a few drinks at night, i spent at least 30,000 baht, possibly 45,000 baht in eight days. admittedly i spent a bit at night, but the atmosphere sucks you in and you cant resist ringing the damn bell at the bar, plus the atmosphere lasts till VERY late, so you are out for longer than normal. tuk tuks, and other boat trips for snorkelling add up too. although food can be cheap, a fairly nice meal for two will easily cost 1200 baht, if you are not eating from street traders and cheap bars. Consider that i was also travelling solo. Have a great trip, i miss the place so much i cant get it from my thoughts. the people are great, and so is the country.

My brother went just a couple of months ago , He said it is a beautiful place . He said he spent about $500.00 in 2 weeks and with the right guide (girl) he was well pleased with the sights and scenery and the food was great. just avoid the tourist traps
This included everything less the airfare to and from.
Be ready to bargain.
This was also after the tourist season and prices are down.
