He will hop into my lap or I will be holding him and he is purring and really happy. Then he will try and climb up me like I have no feelings at all using his claws like I'm a tree still purring. It's very annoying and I want to cuddle with him and pet him but it hurts when I'm being climbed. It's sad because when he jumps into my lap I push him away because I don't want to be clawed.

A cats uses it claws to climb up all things and the second they start to climb they retract their claws to protect themself and so they are able to climb. Your cat has no idea that it is hurting you. My cat does the same things and I have become used to it. If you do not like him climbing on you then then scold him when he does this and put him in your lap and stroke his back. Keep doing this till he gets the idea that you do not want him to climb on you. My cat plays very hard with my husband but he does not use his claws while playing with me. Give him a little time and he will realize not to do this with you as well.

He is kneading/clawing you because that is what he learnt to do when he was feeding from his mother, to make the milk flow faster. He is doing it because he is feeling happy and is enjoying your attention. My best advise is to do like what I did with my cat, and still do, is that rather than push the cat away when he paws you, just push his paws away, or put one hand over them to keep him from moving them, while still petting with the other. If he climbs up you, just life him back down onto your lap and cuddle him again, teach him that he can get as much attention and pamering on your knee.
Remember to share your attention between both cats, he is probably jelous that he gets pushed away while your other cat gets cuddled.
I hope this works to make your relationship with your cat even stronger!! They are after all, the best companion in my opinon!

Cats claw when purring as part of extreme contentment behavior. It begins when a cat is a kitten nursing on the mother, and learns that kneading the mother's breast with the paws makes the milk flow faster. Later a cat shows that same kneading behavior as well as purring when very contented.
Allow him to hop in your lap but when he goes to try to climb, then say in a low hissing voice "knock it off" or to be even more effective squirt at him with canned air when you tell him to knock it off. Cats certainly draw limits on what they will put up with other cats and tell each other off when one of them goes too far and crosses the limits. You can make limits too and the cat will learn what you will and will not allow.

Also, it's easy to clip the sharp tips of cats claws. if the cat struggles, wrap him in a towel while clipping the tips of his claws.

Size-wise, you are the "mama cat" and your kitty is in "baby cat" mode. Purring and pawing are something baby cats do...As a long-time cat owner, my suggestion: you get a special blanket or piece of fleece / Berber to put over your lap / shoulder and let kitty sit on that and knead away. [the 'blanky' can be old or a remnant from fabric store or your old sweater / sweatshirt or ??] . this way kitty gets his needs met and you can cuddle in comfort. Best of all, you don't have to explain the unsightly claw marks.

My cat does the same thing, but I don't mind because she doesn't have claws. It is an instinct they use to sharpen their claws. My cat does this on carpeting, on my legs, anywhere. She does this when she gets into her "sweet" mood and rubs her wet nose all over me while purring.

when a cat is little and at his mothers tit, they will kneed or claw to help the milk come. your his new mother and he wants that feeling of comfort . you do all that his cat mother did and even more, you feed, water, give him a nice worm and cozy place to sleep. he is just being a cat. every time he claws you just flick his paw and say no claws. it will not take him long before he will keep those claws in.

my cat does this too. its kind of a natural cat thing, i've heard people refer to it as kneading. my cat will jump on my chest every time i am laying on my back and he will smush his face up against my face and start purring and clawing my neck. not in a mean way, but in an affectionate way. its cute besides the fact that it can hurt sometimes.

When he does this, disengage the claws and say, "Velvet paws." I don't know why, but this works.
