You, obviously do or you would not be an atheist. After all heaven and everlasting life in eternal bliss with God is a comforting thought. To think that one day we will be with the creator of the Universe and he will bestow his wonders and his love upon us is awesome.
But you an atheist have choosen the truth over this mythology. Why? Some people might respond well who would not want to know the truth. The answer is many, many, many, people prefer to look at the world through rose colored glasses. Look at all of the people that beleive in God with blind fate. It`s kind of like the Matrix you have choosen the blue pill willingly to know the truth, rather than the red which offers comfort and peace of mind. You have choosen to look at and come to terms with the harsh reality of life and death. This is something that belivers don`t realize its not that we don`t believe in God it`s that we have embraced the truth above anything else.
Why do you place such a high value on truth?

Dreamst - I have every idea of how harmful religion is. That was not the question. The question was why do you place such a high value on truth.

Because causality intrigues me a lot. Let me give you an example:
It was around midnight, and me and a few friends were sitting around having a party. Suddenly I noticed the empty beer can on the glass center table moving around on its own accord. Now one of them got really scared. It was pretty spooky. But finding out why the beer can was moving was much more interesting than thinking that some ghost had manifested itself in it. The wind from the ceiling fan, music from the music system and condensation together had caused it to move.
Now, it is very difficult to explain why the need to find out the truth exists in me. But I think that it is because I have rejected the supernatural outright first. When the supernatural cannot exist, then reasons have to be found in the natural world. And this is the reason why I place such a high value on the truth.

I have to wonder if when people ask "questions" like these they really think anyone will fall for it or if its just a way to get around the rule of asking a question so they can stand on their soapboxes and preach to us all.
Can I now use Star Wars to illustrate the concept of faith?
The fact is that an atheist cant prove or disprove the existance of a God anymore than a religious person can. If they choose not to have faith in God then it is their business but a belief, or non belief in something doesnt make it true or not.
You may not believe in God, but to assume you have all the truth out there is pretty darn arrogant.
satan I think it was pretty darn obvious this person was an atheist bashing on religious people

Mankind's quest is to pursue truth---which is only possible by rejecting what is false---& every "Holy Book" on the planet has some obviously false information in it--like a "flat earth--or talking snakes & unicorns etc---we must not hang on to what is false just for the comfort it may provide.

Something I heard in class a few weeks ago should fit this answer nicely. Again should: Truth is the absolute defense

Do YOU like to have a religion forced down your throat that you know is not true? I'd rather hear the truth than some folklore about a god.

I would rather have the truth than to believe in some washed up fairy story cobbled together by stone age men..
"To think that one day we will be with the creator of the Universe and he will bestow his wonders and his love upon us is awesome." - this statement is a total joke! what evidence is there for that? - None at all what so ever.
Where i am from, religious people are a total laughing stock :-) LOL

LOVELY reverse psychology
be indirect when you voice your opinion on the insanity of religion...and the religious right reads it..defenses down
i should do that more often...takes more typing energy than bluntness though

we have to keep pushing on for the sake of generations to come ! obviously some of our friends just want to exist and couldn't care less what happens down the road!! they all think the world is gonna come to an end!
I want the future to live though and succeed and not just to exist!!

If people are left to irrationality and comforting lies, society will eventually cease to function in it's pursuit to ignore reality. This is the only life I get. This is the only life my son gets. If I allow this world to lull itself into ignorant bliss, well, it won't be much of a life after civilization crumbles.
