In California, a juvenile 10-year sentence has got to be for something extremely serious, or a number of offenses that, when added together, equal a 10-year sentence. (The maximum confinement time on Juvenile offenses aggregates in CA, so every little offense he committed along the way would be added to all the others... for a max of 10 years.)
However, the Youth Authority doesn't usually keep wards beyond age 23. If he stayed there until he was 25, then there were additional problems with him during his confinement.
Your friend needs to run for the hills. Some of the most dangerous young people I work with are also the most charming.

In Cali it would have to be an extremely violent felony and parole would terminate at age 25 if I recall correctly. Murder, a shooting/stabbing with major injuries, rape, etc.
Not the kind of person you or anyone needs to be spending time near. And if this person won't say what they were locked up for, they are either full of BS or not someone to be trusted around AT ALL!!!

It sounds like he's a rapist. That's not something that gets cured just because you were in jail for 10 years (Hey, it's not like there's rape in prison, right?) he'll always have the bug and the compulsion. Get the heck out of there now and don't look back

Being he would not tell it is more than likely of a sexual nature.
Not only should she be scared she should run for the hills. He has two strikes against him, being in jail, and not being truthful about it, so the third strike could be one that I would not stay around to fine out

It won't be long before he does it again and then you'll know. You don't do ten years for shoplifting, know what I'm saying.
