Our dog (Golden Retriever) managed to get out of our yard. Not sure but we think she might of gotten hit by something and luckily it just rolled her. She's doing great, but she has some pretty good scrapes on her legs, and one leg actually has a spot that's a little bit bigger than a half dollar where skin and muscle are gone and you can see the bone. Pretty good injury that is healing very nicely. Problem is she came back home with some unwanted friends (fleas & ticks) that we would love to get rid of, but with the injuries I'm not sure what would be safe to use on her or if anything can be used right now.
Any suggestions to get rid of the bugs that is safe with her injuries?
Thanks.

For those who automatically jumped all over me about taking my dog to the vet! Did I say I did not take her? No, I did not! You people need to back off on your accusations and quit collecting points for your wrong assumptions! Just because I'm asking a questions about what I can use on her doesn't say I didn't take her to the vet. Have you ever thought that maybe I already spent a bunch of money at the vet for her injuries and just noticed the bug problem and would like to try to prevent a major outbreak cheaply? From your responses I would say no!

As for when the injury happend, it was Sunday morning. She's already on antibiotics to prevent infection and she has no internal injuries. To make the animal freaks happy, I do clean her injuries, treat and change her bandages twice a day thank you!

Presumably you took the dog to the vet for these injuries - you need to pick up some proper flea and tick treatment while you're there. Since your dog has injuries, I would suggest Frontline spray - this is something you can carefully spray on while you cover the wounds. It treats fleas and ticks. Or there's Capstar, about the only oral flea treatment that actually works, but it doesn't kill ticks, you might just have to pull them off for now.

Just don't use anything from any stores or supermarkets, unless you want to give yourself some more problems - store-bought stuff doesn't work and some are toxic, stores aren't licensed to sell the appropriate drugs.

I am assuming that since her injuries are 'healing nicely' that it has been awhile since the initial injury happened (although i hope you did take her to the vet at some point, as there can be internal injuries that can't be seen until its too late to treat, not to mention bones obviously shouldn't be visible). Having said that, as long as your dog has any open wounds i would not use any topical treatment for fleas/ticks - top spots or shampoos. You can get a pill called capstar from your vet which will kill all the fleas within 30 min (not sure about the ticks - but you can pull those off). If the fleas haven't set up shop in your house yet, this will be enough for her. If you now have a flea infestation in your house, the best thing would be to treat the house and the dog at the same time. The capstar won't last more than a few hours - it doesn't protect from fleas for a month like the topical. Good luck with your golden; i'm glad she made it home safe!

You could probably use Capstar - an oral medication for fleas/ticks but it will only kill the adults on her right now. Not the eggs, etc. Frontline can be used anytime after taking the med. Ask the Vet.

If you can see the bone in her leg, then she needs to see a vet! She could get a serious bone infection from it being exposed like that. And,no,you shouldn't put any kind of pesticide on her when she has such a serious injury. If your bone was showing, wouldn't YOU go to the doctor? Sheesh! Haven't you ever watched "Animal Cops?" Letting your dog walk around with that kind of injury is called "cruelty to animals." Shame on you!

Because the vet should be treating this HORRIBLE injury, you can just ask him when you take her into the vet to have her treated properly

She really should have seen a vet,..if skin and muscle were showing, then it was vet time!

The only thing at this time you can do is to bathe her with gentle mild detergent or baby shampoo, leave on 5-10 mins. the suds before rinsing,... would be safe to do while on amends.
