I can't believe he did this, but now I'm stuck with it. So how long will it last and is there anything faster than a dozen baths to get it out of her long white fur quickly? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband is a pretty awesome guy, even though he does have a mischevious side to him. I did call poison control and the non-toxic markers will not her, and he spent last nite being "the bad guy" giving her baths. So it's all out for now. But please if this is the most horrible thing he ever does, than i think i have it pretty smooth. All i asked for was advice on how to take care of my cat, let me take care of my husband.

Gee, it sounds like your husband has a problem..if all he can do is color a white cat with highlighters..they may be non toxic to people and toxic to cats...I would try to get it off of her with some hydrogen peroxide...I would take a paper towel or clean cloth and wet it in peroxide..then wipe the kitty with it to try to get it off..and get another wet paper towel and wipe of the peroxide...and do small section at a time.. I would also wipe the fur with a dry paper towel...cats do not like their fur wet..I do not know how long it will last or even if it is really not toxic to cats....did you call an animal poison control hotline? They deal with all sorts of stuff that happens to cats and animals.

Don't keep bathing the cat, you will cause the cat to have dry skin problems from excessive bathing. You may be able to get some of it off using a small amount of baby oil on a tissue. Use the tissue to rub the fur between your finger and thumb, do not rub the oil directly into the cats fur as this will cause too much oil to be on the cat. Cats shed, you could just give her a good brushing once a day. It will eventually go away. It won't hurt the cat to have markings, it will hurt the cat when it begins itching and scratching its skin due to excessive bathing. The other person that answered suggesting to trim with the scissors had a great idea. That would work and be less traumatic to the cat Can't resist a quick comment on the hubby... I would be tempted to retaliate by writing IDIOT on his forhead with a permanent marker while he was sleeping. See if he thinks it is funny when the prank is on him.

GEEZ! Some of you people are crazy! I love cats, I have 3! I also have a dog, and I don't write on my animals with sharpies, but I mean, that's kinda funny, as long as he did it with a non-toxic marker. You could give the cat a nice bath with some good deep cleansing shampoo, maybe even shampoo it twice. Why dump your husband, just because he doesn't know how to play with the cats? Some of you people really really overreact. Don't get me wrong, I don't endorse doing that, but come on.... she asked a question about how to get it off, not marriage counseling questions!!

First, dump the husband. Seriously. This is how he treats defenseless animals? This is how he respects, or disrespects, you precious pet? How will he treat you or your children later on? This is truly disturbing. He is old enough (assuming he's at least of legal age to be married) to know better. These are the actions of a three year old. There truly is no excuse.
In the meantime, a good bath should help. I know there are dog shampoos for white fur, but I'm not sure for cats. Just to be safe, I wouldn't use it unless it specifically says "for cats."
If regular cat shampoo isn't working, you can try some dawn. We use it for getting chemicals out of the coat, not sure how well it will work for getting color off the coat though.
I would say it will all grow out eventually, but I'd be worried about her normal grooming during that time. I know it says non-toxic, but I'd imagine prolonged ingestion is not going to be healthy. Do what you can to get it off ASAP. If you are unsuccessful tonight, contact a feline specialist in the morning (a regular vet is likely to blow you off).

I would call the Vet to make sure the marker ink isn't harmful to cats. The Vet could help you with trying to get rid of the ink too. What was your husband thinking? Geez...he needs help. Maybe someone should color him with accent highlighters.

I left my nephew for a a couple of minutes in my living room to watch TV as I cooked dinner. The Lil brat did the same thing too 2 of my fur kids.My white dog and a calico cat. They were non toxic markers but it still P**** me off.Knowing how sensitive a dogs nasal and eyes are.I tried baby wipes to no avail. So It took about 2 weeks for it to go away. Now my nephew is not allowed to be alone with my fur kids and he I must say was not able to sit down for a few.LOL No I didn't abuse him,but I was damn close to it.LOL.My dog and cat looked like small Indians.God I was mad.But my nephew was only 8 at the time and he said they were radar points so that my pets could shoot death rays from their heads.Needless to say if its non toxic,he will be fine. But I would wait till hubby went to bed and mark him the same way. Then maybe he will get the point.LOL

My gut feeling is you'll have to wait for it to grow out... highlighter may come out with a bath, but if it's the permanent kind of Sharpie, then it's not going anywhere unless you shave it off.... he probably thought it would be funny, guys can be really immature.

Are you sure you want to keep him around? (Your husband, that it).....
I know of no safe way of removing the Sharpie from the cat. I think you'll just have to let it come off naturally. Anything strong enough to work, would be harmful to your cat.

The fur is 'dyed' now, so it'll have to probably molt out with the winter shed.
Hope you gave him a good 'what for'. That was stupid.
They're non-toxic but still..... Call your vet and ask if it'll be harmful if she cleans her fur and licks it.

Your husband? What is he - 5? What an idiot. "Non-toxic" to humans doesn't necessarily mean it is to pets. And since cats groom themselves your cat could be poisoned by the ink. It's PERMANENT ink - it's not going to wash out with shampoo. Please take this cat to the vet and let them figure out how to help it. And get rid of the idiotic, immature, abusive *** of a husband. What a jerk!
