i understand wanting fresh water, but my cat will not drink fresh water out of his cup. he only wants to drink water out of our cups. he will however drink shower or toilet water. or muddy water outside. just as long as it isnt in his cup. we have tried several bowls and cups. should we get a cat fountain?

yes you are right my cat doesnt mind getting wet at all! in fact if you turn on the shower he will swat the water with his paw and then lick his paw. it is too cute.

is the cat's cup near his food? in the "wild" cats would not normally eat and drink in the same places and this may be why your cat doesn't like to drink out of "his" cup? my cat used to be like this, i would place her food and water on the floor but she would only drink out of a glass on the kitchen counter. when i moved i just put her water by her food, no glass on the counter, and she has drunk out of her bowl by her food ever since...odd! however, she does also seem to prefer slightly stale water so i put fresh down every day with her food and then have 2 bowls in the garden, one with tap water in which i change every other day and one which just catches rain water. my other cat, who lives mainly upstairs, has a bowl of water which i leave for 2 days before changing as he will not drink if it is too fresh! bless them!

Now, this is interesting. Maybe you should try letting him drink from running water in the sink. Maybe a cat fountain might just be the trick. But, if possible, don't let him drink the muddy water outside because it could contain antifreeze from cars, poison from weed killers people use on their lawns or some sort of parasites. Sounds like your cat doesn't mind getting wet. Good luck with him, he's a first in my experience. But it seems he's getting enough water one way or another.

We have 6 cats, and we have the exact same problem. They each have their own ideas about when and where their water should be!
Basically, I just keep a few different bowls/glasses around the house, and fill them all the time. We have one ceramic bowl in the bathroom (which they love), and one glass on the window sill (which they also love). Needless to say, they don't like the water bowl that's near their food dish. Cats are just that way. I think you have to just go with it. Since having water is crucial, don't fight 'em on it. Just let them drink wherever they want.
By the way, we got a fountain, and they didn't drink from it. I think it's an expensive crap shoot myself.
Good luck.

Usually there actually is some logic to it if you think like a cat.
It might not be the water. Maybe its the cup.
When was the last time that you cleaned his cup? Put it thru the dishwasher or used hot water and soap on it. Was that longer ago than your cup? the shower? even the toilet?
Try pouring the water out of his cup and running your fingers in it. Does it feel slimey? Smell it. Does it smell moldy? Not that you would have to be able to tell since cats have better smellers than we do. But if your toilet and the water in it is fresher and cleaner than what you offer him in his cup then I would consider your cat to be smart.

my cat is like that. She will not drink from her water bowl, but goes to the other side of the house to drink from the dog's water bowl (we have to keep them seperate so he won't eat her food) this often involves her crawling under a door or two...but she wants his water.
A cat fountain may be a good investment if you have several cats who will all use it.

I do not feel that there's whatever that you'll do approximately it. I have a buddy who is cat will handiest drink out of the tub within the upstairs toilet. She may not drink out of sinks or water bowls so their handiest manner round that is to run the tub faucet on a rather sluggish drip for an hour or so a couple of occasions an afternoon. If they're running they only go away it dripping. On a part be aware, my cat handiest beverages out of the fish bowl. She does not look to care approximately the fish although!

Most cats are weird about water. All of mine would rather drink out of my cup, a toilet or the sink then out of their bowl.
