Where do I begin to find this out? (I know it is valuable because in 1950 it was valued at about 475.00, I said valuable, not priceless lol) Any help would be appreciated.

Take a photo of it, and contact Sothebys the auctioneers by phone, ask about the free evaluation service they offer, with the hope that you might go on to sell the artwork with them. They will want first to look at the picture ,either on line or thro the post. Make sure you give its dimensions and any other details you know about the work. You are not obligated to sell through them. I have never been charged for this service, but of course check this out.

I, too, would suggest taking it to an expert for a valuation and to find out who the artist is. If you already have some idea of the value, you are not going to get short-changed on the valuation, so you have nothing to lose really.

If your artist is of any note and, if you have a few hours to spare, you could always trawl through the link below which has facsimiles of many artist's signatures and monogrammes.

I would try to search for the image, or if I really wanted to sell it and couldn't figure out what it was I would go to a museum or art dealer or something and ask them who it was and about the image. Even if they don't know the specific image the chances are high that they can recognize who the work is by. If you know anything about the piece (like the era it was made in) it would help to go to someone who specializes in that kind of art. hope thats helpful!

Take the piece to a reputable art dealer. It is his/her job to find things like this out.....if your piece is indeed valuable... it shouldn't be difficult for a good dealer to give you an accurate estimate. Of course, you will be charged a fee.
