I burned a small part of the roof of my mouth yesterday morning while drinking hot coffee. Now (two days laters) it's really sore. The pain is very localized, and it feels as though that portion of the hard palate itself is very sore and tender whenever I eat anything or press up on it. There's also a bump in that spot and it is slightly reddish pink in color. Is this a a normal reaction to a hard palate burn? I'm scared it might be oral cancer. The last time I went to the dentist (two months ago) he diagnosed me with TMJ and took X-rays and said everything else was fine. Could oral cancer just pop up like that even though X-rays detected nothing?

The reason I'm concerned about oral cancer is that I used to be a one-pack-a-day smoke for four years, but quit four months ago (have had only maybe 15 cigarettes since...socially). Otherwise, I'm healthy. Just stressed!

Sounds to me like a 1st to 2nd degree burn...but I would call your dentist to make sure it's not deeper.

Oral cancer, unless you're a smoker or snuff user, I think is kind of rare.

such a burn by itself will not cause cancer--more than likely it is a blister. Have dentist or doctor check it anyway.

THIS IS NOT ORAL CANCER, IT DOESN'T OCCUR THIS WAY. DID YOU BADLY BURN YOUR MOUTH?
YES.
WILL THIS HEAL NORMALLY?
YES
WILL A CANCER EVER BE SEEN ON DENTAL X-RAYS?
USUALLY NOT.
WHY?
BECAUSE CANCERS ARE SOFT TISSUE PATHOLOGIES WHICH WON'T SHOW ON X-RAYS.
BONE CANCERS THAT ARE ADVANCED WOULD BE SEEN ON CERTAIN X-RAYS.
