Unfortunately, there's no foolproof way to avoid scarring and the older you are when you get chicken pox, the more likely you are to scar. Three things can help,
1. The most important thing as noted by several others is, DON'T SCRATCH OR PICK. Scarring is the body's response to deep injury on the skin. Chickenpox by itself can cause a deep enough injury to cause a scar and there isn't anything you can do about that. Frequently, however, people scratch the lesions deeply enough to cause (or worsen) scarring all by themselves.
2. Any brand antibacterial ointment to the lesions after they've crusted over (not to open wounds; when they say "for external use only" they MEAN it). We know that antibiotic ointment reduces (slightly) the amount of scarring that occurs with healing lacerations so it stands to reason that it could help here as well.
3. Scars evolve in appearance over the course of 6 months. If the scars tan during this time, it can make them move visible - so keep the scars and the skin around the scars (e.g. the entire face) covered with suntan lotion while in the sun for the next 6 months.
Finally, if after 6 months, you're unhappy with how the scars look, consult a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon.

If you currently have chicken pox, apply neosporin to the area.
If not, enjoy! My chicken pox scars are my favorite!

Take care of yourself really well while you have it. Use Aveeno powder in your bath water and apply Aveeno cream or aloe vera to the rash when you get out of the bath. Do not scratch. Take an antihistamine to help with the itchiness so you don't scratch.
