well, an ipod is the most popular and the best in my eyes. However they can be quite expensive if your on a tight budget. Luckily they have a range of ipods from the most expensive ipod video to the cheaper ipod shuffle.
I reccommend you hae a look at ipod shuffles or if your willing to spend the money an ipod nano.
There is also a huge range of mp3 players and all you would have to do do is walk into a shop that sells electronics like that and see the varition in the devices. Shop assistants often know alot of information about the product so just ask them.

I got a very generic, but very girly looking mp3 player for my daughter's 10th birthday last year. I found it at Target and it looks like a little purple crown. The buttons look like jewels. In theory it's great - and it was cheap! However, she's had it for about 9 months now and rarely ever uses it anymore. Why? There is no display. This means that every time she turns it on, a random song begins & she has to press the forward button repeatedly trying to find the one she wants to listen to.
I am seriously considering springing for an iPod for her 11th birthday.

NONE OF THAT STUFF at THAT AGE! a boombox in their room is good enough until they can begin earning money to pay for that by age 12 (at least)!!! society has lost it's 'mind' for real because of technology and media...
not in my house! good luck!
(ooh, and i worry the man/men that will have to meet those needs later on... mp3 at 9... what will it be at 19? hmmm...)

Creative Zen (Available at Target) holds about 125 songs and they are about $80. Anything cheaper doesn't normally work as well. Whatever brand you get do NOT get Coby. That is the worst electronic brand EVER.

i brought my kids theirs when they were 9 and 7 years old
i didnt buy them the most expensive or the cheapest either
i went for ones that has at least one gig of space, that way they can store 240 songs
cos the cheaper ones can sometimes only store 36 songs, which can get boring!, good luck
