Very general question. Where in Ireland will you be visiting? How long will you be here?

Relax and have a few pints while you're over.

I'm willing to bet it will be raining (sometime) while you're here, so make sure you bring some wet-weather clothing.

I agree, stick to Dublin at the holiday season. You'll get to see the city dressed up for Christmas! It really is very pretty.

Depending on where you are from, Ireland isn't really all that cold in winter, (the 50's but windy) but dress in layers and prepare to get rained on a bit. A scarf is a must. Once you have a few drinks in you you'll be fine. I personally like visiting in the off season as it's less crowded. You will have a great time, it's a wonderful city.

Dublin also has one of the best tourist centres/information points I have ever seen, be sure to swing by there, everyone is very helpful.

Have a great New Years, what a wonderful way to start 2008.

New Year's in Ireland is something of a wash-out, unless you go to Dublin where there will probably be something going on. Or maybe you might find a private party to crash ....

Weather? The weather in Ireland is changeable at best, but it will be cold then, cold enough to need good coats, shoes and scarves, and possibly a hat as well. Not likely to snow, but frost a distinct possibility. It rains all year round in Ireland.

Sites: As it's outside of the tourist season a lot of places could be closed. Check with the tourist board to be sure.

Dublin has a lot to do - lots of great night life, Irish pubs with live music, and beautiful museums.

Also be sure to see:

The Cliffs of Moher (weather permitting and be careful walking out there)

You can take a beautiful driving trip on the "Ring of Kerry."

The castle banquets are cheesy but fun. I recommend Bunratty Castle.

Blarney Castle is kind of a waste of time.

I like the town of Kilkenny, and the cathedral there is really cool.

Have a great trip. I'm jealous!

We have a saying in Ireland "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes"

This partially reflects the changeability of the weather here. But more so, an innate, misplaced optimism!

Check out www.discoverireland.com. Particularly check out festivals, as it's always good to see how the locals enjoy themselves when you are travelling.

Stick to in and around Dublin City centre and bring good warm clothes and good shoes as it snows or rains to the same extent !! but the warmth of the people will more than make up for it.
