No, do NOT use a flea collar, they don't work. They're a pointless exercise in pointlessness. Same goes for shampoos, powders and 'bombs'. Anything you get from a store is not going to work, because stores are not licensed to sell the appropriate drugs (although I hear you can get Frontline from some pet stores now, which is great) - mostly you can only get the stuff that works from vets. You need some Frontline, or Advantage or Revolution for your dog. This is a liquid in a pipette that you put on the back of the neck - make sure it gets on his skin, not his fur. Don't bath him within 48 hours before or after applying it or you'll inactivate it. Any veterinary product will sort your dog right out - I recommend Frontline Plus.

You may also find you need to spray your house, in which case, again make sure it's something from a vets.

You need to purchase a good flea and tick shampoo and bathe your dog according to label instructions. Then, once dry, put Frontlline Plus on your dog. You can get this from your vet or from any good pet store. You will need to know the weight of your dog and then buy the appropriate size. It is not cheap, but it really, really works. I use it on both my dogs, it lasts a month and I NEVER have fleas on my dogs or in the house. You will also have to treat the house, carpeting, pet bedding, etc. Vacuum really well and then throw the vacuum bag away right away, even if its new and not filled that much. The little buggers will crawl back out and into your house.

Go to the petstore get frontline. You apply topically it once a month, keeps fleas off. It won't act immediatly but give it a week and the fleas will be gone. Its easy and after 1 day it's waterproof, unlike collars. Plus you can get it at a pet store and your vets office.
Baths only get off the fleas on the dogs it doesn't keep the fleas off. The eggs and larvae will live in the enviorment (aka your carpet) and reinfect your dog when they hatch so...
Then vacuum everyday to pick up the flea eggs left on the enviroment, so they won't bite you. Dog and cat fleas won't live on humans but they will bite.

Bathe him in a Dawn (original - not bleach formula) bath. Mix the Dawn about 1 part Dawn, 3 parts water. Do not wet him, except with the mixture - starting with the head first. Put vaseline around the eyes to protect them. Drench him totally and leave it on for about five minutes. Rinse well with warm water, and dry your guy. Wash all his bedding, your bedding if he shares with you, any soft thing he lays on, and get a good flea drop either from your vet or at the pet store, and apply it religiously as directed.

I've used this for flea ridden kittens and it's proved safe and effective. If he sleeps outside, try some diateneous earth around his house - but be careful not breathe it in. It's dust is a irritant to the lungs, but chemically it's not toxic.

We usually use Frontline Plus, but the fleas have been horrible this year. So, I did some research online and am now using Brewer's Yeast and Garlic Tabs, they're made by Four Paws. I got them offline. It took about a week for the pills to kick in, but haven't had any problems since then! Oh, and it's cheap also!

Vets and many pet stores carry Frontline. Apply this to your dog monthly to kill and prevent fleas and ticks. Also, you need to vaccum your house and wash all of your bedding because fleas love to live in these things. Consider getting your house sprayed by a pesticide company such as Cooks.
Do NOT buy any flea medication from the grocery store- things made by Hartz/Zodiac have killed hundreds of pets due to the chemicals used. Only use Frontline, Advantage, or Capstar.

Frontline!!!!! it is ablsolutly amazeing and they make it for dogs and cats! my cat had such bad fleas last year i really thought there was nothing we could do... we sprayed her, our stuff the carpet didnt work, we used powder on her the carpet, didnt work, we gave her a flea bath 2 times!! didnt work!!! i combed her all the time... still didnt work! so i went to my vet cause i couldnt take it ne more!!! and they told me about frontline. it is a bit pricey, ( about 16-20 $$) but it worked great!!!!! ALMOST ALL the fleas died in a day!!! NO JOKE!!!! all you do is you go to your vet tell them that you dog has really bad flea and that you would like to try frontline. tehy will give it to you ... from there you put the drop on the back of the neck... ( it may be in a differnt place with dogs) and littereally they will fall right off!!!!! you only put on that one dose and it says it last for a month but i honestly didnt see ne more flea's till like 3 months after that they came back again and i had to do it again ( thats what happens this time of year)
DO NOT use anything from wal mart or place like that for your first dose! Frontline is the best one and will give you the best results right away... after the first month you can use something different... i wouldnt suggest it... but i have had times when i was low on money and had to settle with the $8 stuff from petco. it works just as good but the results dont work as fast. but i also put this on her when i picked up the flea's in the early stages if they are out of control again you HAVE to use frontline.. trust me on this one!

You should use a mixture of boric acid and salt. Boric acid acts as a desiccant and dries out the exoskeleton of the flea, but does not have any side effect on human beings or animals. Check this out http://pests.in/fleas.html

ONLY thing that works on fleas, flea eggs and larvae are Frontline, Advantage, or a similar name brand (not Harz Mtn. junk sold at Walmart) topical liquid that you put on the back of the dog's neck every single month.

Flea dips, baths, collars, spray, etc. only kill a few adult fleas - they come right back when the eggs and larvae hatch - and can make your dog sick.

Frontline and Advantage work - don't even bother with anything else - temporary at best.
