I want to help the country when I'm older and be a soldier, but is it wrong for Christians to fight in wars when they are helping their country.

think of it this way ... if there is another Christian, in another country who is thinking the same way you are, and one day our country goes to war with their country the two of you as bothers and/or sisters in Christ could literally be shooting at one another. Personally, I would not recommend it.

No it isn't wrong, and this is an age old question and concern for many(I'm sure), throughout the space of time. Any person that wishes to defend his/her country and believes in that cause, whether for religion or another reason, cannot believe that what they are doing is wrong. Who determines what is "wrong" ? Are you going by how you were brought up? We as Americans have been fighting for religious independence since we first became a country, those in the Middle East are fighting for their independence but the difference seems to be that it isn't just a war about religion & someone deciding that their religion is wrong, but it also involves politics. All wars are conflicts/disagreements about something, but the real difference comes from the fanatics like Hamas or the IRA where they turn the regular fighting against innocents. Did this help you? While war is seen as being wrong by many and often sometimes hurts more than it helps, even back in bible times there was a need for soldiers. You can take a look in The Bible in Judges7:1-25(the book of Judges-chapter 7- verses 1 through 25) This is about an army of men named the Gideon's 300 that were instructed by God. Becoming a soldier is a decision you must make on your own when the time is right.

Hi Kaylene, your intent to help the country is noble. The choice to be a soldier is one that means accepting involvement in war should those that lead the country find a reason to go to war. Unfortunately, the reasons to go to war are not necessarily based on Christ's interest, but on national or other interests (like defending the oil supply). So there may be potential scenarios that are in conflict with Christian values, depending on the situation (and leaders) at that time.

But that sounds like it's still some time in the future for you. For now "Set your heart first on the kingdom and justice of God and all these things will also be given to you. Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself" (Mt 6 33:34). He will lead and guide you when the time comes.

If you are a soldier, you are a soldier to serve your country. It is not wrong for a Christian to serve their country. Serving others is what Jesus said to do, soldiering is one of those things.

So if you are going to be a soldier, be a good one, be the best one. Be a soldier not only for your country, but in order for you to serve God within the Armed Services. With honor, dedication, and conviction, and carrying out your orders to the best of your God given ability.

The young and old, innocent and lame, the blind and deaf in your country depend on you to protect them, now more than ever. There are people who want to get at them, personally. To make them fear. Those who want them to fear are the 'bad guys' literally. It's like this world has changed into a bad "B" movie.

If you join the Armed Services, your body belongs to your country, but your soul belongs to God.

If we had more Christians fighting wars, maybe there would be less war in this world. You can help your country and not loose your christian principles. Go make the world a better place. God bless you

It is o'kay to serve the military.
Many OT passages point to the fact that God expected the men of Israel to defend the country, both from a spiritual and physical kingdom standpoint thus showing God's approval of military action; Rom 13 says that we are to support government for they are ordained of God. Military action is a part of the ordinary support of a country... That is a quick answer, hope it helps.

You have to get your religious beliefs firmly fixed in your mind. Many veterans' organizations have a slogan: "God and Country".
Notice that God comes first.
When you are older you will have to decide if what you are fighting for (what you're country is fighting for) reflects what you believe about right and wrong. Right and wrong are absolutes. As a Christian you believe in certain principles. If you believe your country upholds those principles, it is not wrong to fight to uphold them. In fact it is right and necessary at times.
Only you can decide that for yourself.

You didn't ask a question here but I assume you are saying you don't believe in killing. I was in the navy six years and did not carry a gun. My gun was an aircraft carrier. But we did not kill anyone with it. We actually were sent to rescue american refugees in Lebanon. The military does many of these types of operations. There are many clerical and medical jobs where you are helping people, sometimes even helping our opponents if they are wounded. Also it is okay to defend yourself. The commandment 'Thou shall not kill' actually means 'thou shall not murder'. God understands that you might have to defend yourself or innocent and helpless people from brutal people.
