The problem is not "RawHide".

It is the inner layer of the hide usually from a cow.

The material in the rawhide probably is not a problem for most dogs, although some can be allergic to it. The real problem is that some dogs have a tendency to swallow too large a piece of the rawhide and it can get stuck in their esophagus, stomach or intestines, and require surgical removal.

They are bad for dogs when the dog bites off pieces too big and swallows them, and they can get caught inside somewhere. Some dogs don't do this, and do ok with rawhide.
There are tons of items for sale (and not just for dogs either) that are bad or don't even work, yet people buy because they don't know better.
There are some crappy dog foods out there that aren't much better than garbage.
And they still sell flea collars, which at best don't even work barely.

Dogs need something to chew, and people don't know that they are dangerous. But, they are safer than chewing up rugs and other things, and some people believe it's a tradeoff. Getting the unbleached ones, made in the USA are better, and safer, but harder to find and more expensive.

In the end, it's about money. If there's enough of a market, they will make it.

They aren't too bad unless they are given to the dog too often because they can cause intestinal blockage. If you must give your dog these I recommend not giving them to the dog but once every two weeks or longer to prevent blockage. The rawhide tends to swell in the dogs stomach and that is what causes the blockage- I do not give my dogs these because of the potential dangers, including choking. So it's really best not to give the dog any rawhide bones.
They sell these because they do not harm the majority of dogs that consume them so they do not consider them dangerous. The companies sell them because people by them and the majority of people who do buy these, do not realize they are potentially dangerous.

I don't use rawhides because they get stringy and can also get hung in a puppy or dogs mouth depending on the size of the dog. I like the ones that crumble up when they are chewing on them-easy to swallow and digest. When I sell a puppy I always put a rawhide chewy that crumbles in the bag of puppy chow for them.

They are not bad for all dogs in all situations. I have used rawhide for years with no ill effects but other dogs swallow big chunks and other dogs won't chew them at all.

Many dogs used greenies without incident while a few developed obstructions. It depends. Dogs are really different and what works for some will not work for others.

There are also many different kinds of rawhides. Some are much better than others.

We, as "Humans"...the most "intelligent" animals on the face of this Earth, as we define ourselves, are willing and gullible enough to buy ANYTHING!

We buy soil for our plants although soil is all around most of us...for FREE...all we have to do is dig it up and sterilize if in our ovens for about 60 minutes...but, we choose to buy it!

Some (many) years ago, after the so-called walk on the moon in the early 1970's, someone came up with the brainy idea to sell "Moon Rocks". Believe me, some people actually bought the "Moon Rocks"!

Remember the cliche: BUYER BEWARE!

I guess because dogs need a way to clean their teeth seeing as they don't get to chew bones (most don't)...Lots of this are good for dog but their sold....same for us humans....the all mighty $$$$$$

I never had a problem with them until this dog i have now. he thinks if it fits in his mouth it should go down whole after its all soggy. he does not get them now...nor the other cause the bottomless pity will take it and down it goes...

Yes, I'd like to know that, too. I bought some for the dog next door not knowing they were bad until I read it on one of the questions here. I had no idea they were bad for dogs and my response was the same as yours--why are they being sold if they are bad for dogs? It really ticked me off.

For the same reason they sell commerical foods for dogs, they are also bad for dogs. But it goes the same for our food. There are so many foods we eat or products we buy that are bad for us yet they still sell them. As long as they are making money the products will still be on the market. It all boils down to money.
