I got a Pell grant for community college. I got a letter stating that I got "this much for fall" and "this much for spring". What about winter? Am I not allowed to take classes after the Christmas break?!! Help! I have no idea what is going on!

Typically, the second semester of the school year is called the spring semester. It normally begins after Christmas break. The letter just states that you qualified for the Pell Grant for the fall semester and the spring semester (classes beginning after winter break). I have included some free resources below. Good luck!

The award letter is based on full time classes (12 credit hours or more) Fall and Spring. If there is no winter term on your award letter than the school is a semester school, first term (Fall) from Sept to Dec. and the second term (Spring) from Jan. to May. Usually you get a few weeks off for Christmas and New Years.

Remember, your Pell amount is based on full time, so if you are attending less than 12 credit hours, see your financial office for the exact amounts.

If you did not take full time classes for Fall and/or Spring, there may be Pell Grant available for summer term. Again, ask the financial aid office and they should be able to help.

If your school is a semester school, then you will only get aid for Fall and Spring (Fall typically being from August to December and Spring from January to May). If your school is a quarter school, then you would get aid for Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Talk to a financial aid officer at your school for more information - especailly to see if you are a semester or quarter school. Good luck!

If you are on the semester system there are only two semesters, fall and spring.

Contact your school register office. They can explain it, as well as give you a break down.
