The employer does not have to contact you. It is a courtesy. I do not think there is anything wrong with checking back to see how far along they are. You could ask something like, "When do you think the interviews will start". If they tell you they already have, then I guess they didn't like your resume. Sometimes when you leave your name, it shows you are interested and are assertive. Don't call every day though.

Did you apply in person or mail in a resume / application? There is nothing wrong with calling up the company and politely asking whether they have had a chance to review your application. Be prepared to tell them -- quickly and clearly -- why you think you are a good candidate. I think that shows some initiative and would never hold it against an applicant. Good luck to you!

Some never do. If they want to interview you, you'll be contacted, otherwise you simply can't count on hearing from them. Job hunting is a numbers game. The more you try, to greater the likelihood of finding a position you like. Just keep putting out the resumes and feelers!

A follow up call is not a bad thing or if you have a recruitment contact email do that as well.

The position could still be open and they have not actively started pulling and screening.
See if you can find out a date it was posted.

It depends on the company. It is possible that you may never hear from them. It depends on how your qualifications match up to the job. Chances are they have received several applications. You might want to call the HR/Recruiting department and confirm that they received your resume. Don't call after that. If you call back multiple times, that will hurt your chances.

You need to call them and let them know that you are very interested in the position. They have so many application that they review each day. So show some interest if you want the job.

I would call them and ask about your application. I believe it shows that you are very interested. Some employers get hundreds of applications and don't have time to contact everyone.

I was taught to write a follow up letter immediately after the interview and if they hadn't called in a week, to call them, so they would know I was really interested in the job. It hasn't failed me yet.
