Once you're diagnosed with hypothyroidism, you need to take your meds for the rest of your life. You can die from not taking them. It will not happen quickly, but over time, everything in your body will begin to slow down, including your heart rate, and you can slip into a coma.
Another thing to think about...if you stop taking your meds when you are pregnant, you could wind up giving birth to an under-developed baby, since your fetus's growth would also slow down.

It's so very important to take your medication for the rest of your life. If you stop, your symptoms will all come back. They could include weight gain, hair loss, nails that will not grow, and extreme fatigue. These are just a few. I have a symptom where I can't get warm, even when all those around me are fine. It's not fun to take medication every day, I know. But I ran out once, and I was in bad shape. I will never let myself run out again. It's for your own good, so take it. Good Luck.

Yes. You can die if you stop your medication for hypothyroidism. Taking L-thyroxine meds etc. supplements your body of deficiency from these hormones in you thyroid gland. There is a condition called myxedema coma a result of untreated hypothyroidism, the patient can die from it.

I take synthroid, or a generic synthroid every day. Before I started taking synthroid, I was very tired all the time. My hands and feet were always cold, I gained a lot of weight, but had no energy even to go for a walk. And there was the depression. Oh, and my eyebrows (the outside half) fell out, and my hair was falling out, too.

If you stop taking your med, these are the symptoms you can expect. I don't recommend it. Your thyroid is underactivated and it's not going to change. Taking extra meds is the only way to stay healthy.

If you have hypothyroidism and not taking your med (levothyroxine, i'm guessing) then your thyroid levels will fall which may lead to anything from weakness to tooth loss, not to mention muscle atrophy. There is alot of bad things that could happen, try visiting mercksource.com for a more thorough explanation.

Well, you'll have your problems with hypothyroidism again. Why are you interested in going off of the meds?
