In my parents' room, there's a fan that sits on a nightstand. The wire is always plugged in. One time while watching TV(fan was off), the fan suddenly went on High power by itself. In order to do that, you'd have to press the High button. How come it went on by itself? It never did that before.

I would say that it had a short in the wiring, and it wasn't that it suddenly came on by itself but that, in fact, it had earlier gone off by itself when it shorted. It came back on suddenly when current was reestablished. I think it's time to get a new fan.
