If you live in a small house, say a townhouse or appartment...

should I get a chihuahua or a cavalier king charles spaniel?
what are the pros and cons of those two breeds?

CKC as in Continental Kennel Club? That is a scam registry for puppymillers and backyard breeders who have low quality dogs that can't be registered by AKC.

CKC= Canadian Kennel Club is good.

Personally, I'd get the Cav.. but from a better breeder.... Chihuahuas bark and nip too much for my taste.

Chihuahua Pros:
-Smallest dog breed
-Very loving companion to their chosen human
-Don't need a big yard or a lot of exercise
-Don't shed excessively
-Beds/etc. don't take up much space

Chihuahua Cons:
-Can be very noisy/yappy
-Often become aggressive to people outside their family circle, which may be dangerous if you have close neighbors and there is a chance of children approaching the dog
-May be too small to walk up long flights of stairs in an apartment; you'd have to carry him everywhere

Cavalier Pros:
-Quieter and calmer than Chis
-Very friendly, do well around children and strangers
-Fairly low energy, moderate exercise requirements
-More independent, can be left alone longer than Chi
-Still a good small size

Cavalier Cons:
-Shed more than Chis and require more grooming
-Tend to run after birds and small animals; lack of a fenced yard could become an issue
-From a poor breeder, Cavs can exceed 25lbs and an oversized Cav may be too large for some apartment restrictions

Good luck!

(LoL, don't cry Shadow's, she meant Cavalier King Charles, not puppy mill spaniel! :-) )

Well, personally i would go with a CKC Spaniel. I love the spaniel breeds. They are beautiful dogs. There is a really cool site where you can take a short quiz and it will give you the dog breeds it suggests for you. Give that a try and see what suets you best. I know both breeds and get snippy too at times, so thats another thing to watch if you have small kids.

ok. chihuahuas are very small and fragile but suitable for life in a townhouse or a apartment. you will also have to deal with alot of yapps and barks since these dogs are VERY vocal. a spaniel will need a little bit more exercise and grooming but are wery friendly and sociable so therefore they are worth the grooming and excercise.chihuahuas are allso very playful and full of love and the spaniel is too except in a more comforting then playful way.good luck and hope it helps!

Chihuahuas are obviously smaller, and they shed less, although neither breed sheds a huge amount. Chihuahuas are more dependent and easily scared. They are less friendly, but also less energetic (so a little better for a small house) so i guess, chihuahuas are only better because of size, and CKCs are better for most other ways.

realy depends on your preference...

chihuhaua:
pros:
low grooming
SMALL
can be litterbox trained
dont mind getting no outdoor excersize
if bought from a good breeder tend to be a "healthy breed"
they are smart
very loving
they get VERY attated to one person
cons:
tend to be yippy/loud
can be difficult to housebreak
prone to hypoglycemia and luxating patella
bad breeders have added to the health problems by breeding runts to runts making sickly dogs
they tend to suffer seperation anxiety
can have a propensisty to behavioural problems due to lack of socilization.
can be "difficult" with strangers or anyone who isnt their person.

CKC spaniel:
pros:
Sweet natured
Happy go lucky
Small without being delicate/breakable
easy to train
not prone to yippyness
cons:
the breed has ALOT of genetic issues, its VERY important to buy from a wonderfull breeder!
can be hard to housebreak
more grooming upkeep

either way, either adopt or buy from a responsible respectable breeder who knows their lines well, ofa and cerfs their lines as well as does any other genetic testing.
and most importanlty do not buy from anyone claiming "rare" or "teacup" ect.

EDIT TO ADD
by CKC poster means cavalier king charles spaniel NOT the registry.

A king Cavalier would be best. They are smart and not like a Chihuahua in regards to temperment and winey barking. Chi are nervous dogs and very yappy. the Cav. is sweet and mostly calm

it really all depends on your job. if you want a chihuahua ( i have done a ton of reaserch so believe me on this one) you will need to take it everywear with you! they become very attached to their owners and are very protective of their owners and need lots of attention! they get jelious very easily and have heath problems too like all dogs. they cant wear collers because of their sensitive treacea! they cant be left in a car when you go into a store and you cant leave them home alone all day. they are great for town houses and appartments because that is wear they get most of their excersize but not all running around the house. another bonus is they eat very little. but please! please please please be coragious and dont get a chihuahua without doing reaserch!
