Are there any laws against having a High School Rifle club? If we were to meet once a month at a shooting range and never bring any firearms or ammunition on school property would they allow just advertising starting one like they let the drama club, math club, Italian culture club etc. advertise? I plan to go shooting in November with a few friends just for fun and thought it would be cool to start a club and everyone that wants to can go.

I live in Houston, there is a gun range outside the city limits that is OK and the people there are very nice. They have fixed my guns for free before when I mess them up, they have talked with me about laws etc. for nearly an hour, they are willing to help me do a ballistic science project....really great guys. Houston is the city.

How do I contact these people you guys are speaking of. I don't know where the board of education is or who they are or what they do... I don't know much about school other than they are inefficient.

What are some positive things I can use to forward my idea? "We is gunna go awn doun tu tha shutin rang an sheut sum houles in payper fur fun" doesn't sound to good. The description has to make this sound safe and educational and positive. Any ideas?

I doubt that there are any laws against it, but your school administration might not like the idea. Ask your Principal if it'd be ok, and if he says no, have your parents ask the superintendent. Make sure to make them feel welcome to come along, as well. If that fails, you might have to just spread it by word of mouth, telling your friends who are into shooting and telling them to tell anyone they know of to spread the word. Oh, and if you throw the word safety in there somewhere, it might help your cause. Something about firearms safety training or some such thing.

My old high school used to have a rifle club, I think it was stopped in the 80's. Much before having a bunch of "troubled" students; it was ok for members to have guns at the school. Most activites like this are gone, just like the boxing clubs/program. The school used to have boxing matches in addition to a shooting team, I would believe both are gone because of the magic word "liability".
I'm not aware of laws that would prevent such a club, but I would imagine a new club would require permission to be formed from an authoratative figure in the school. Good luck getting a school board, principal, or whoever to sign off on that one.
I graduated back in 2004 and would have loved a competitve shooting club. Me and my friends shot a lot of clays, we did 100 and 200 yard rifle shooting, and we probably would have done pistol matches if only we could have owned pistols.
Really this club sounds like a lot fo fun, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. It probably will be turned down. One other thing you may want to consider is the extra attention you will get for asking. I can guarentee you that if you ask to form the club and at any later point your school ever gets a threat of violence; you can count on being the first peson the school/police will "visit".

Great idea. Like has been mentioned early, expect some resistance from some closed-minded people, but stress "safety and respect"....

You may want to seek out a faculty member, coach or school official that has an interest in firearms, is a instructor or trainer or shoots competitively. He or she can be a big ally in convincing the powers that be to consider this idea.

You may also want to approach gun range owners, gun shop owners, etc, in your town to see if they would be interested in sponsoring some training and support for such a club.

I have visited a few high schools with rifle clubs. One I know has a rimfire rifle range out behind the football stadium.

Great Idea
We just got a club started here in Michigan.
it is for all intents and purposes an outdoors club.
Archery shot gun and rifle fishing canoeing
Check with your science and phys ed teachers and see if any of them would be interested in sponsoring the club.
Ours is sponsored by one of the science teachers.
It started as NASP(National Archery in the Schools Program) and branched from there.
The archery is done on school grounds and the balance of the activities are done off school grounds.
My husband and I help with the program we coach the archery and we are both NRA certified Range Safety Officers.
The teacher contacted us and asked if we would help get things going. This is the 2nd year we have had this going and we have about 100 kids that belong to the club.
If you want some other ideas or help approaching the teacher or board members feel free to contact me.

I would also love to get a rifle club, or even team in my school. Just like everyone else says, talk to the school board or superintendant, I'm sure they won't mind. I will try the same thing. Best of luck in Houston, for I live in Pittsburgh, PA. Shoot safe and have fun.

There isn't a law against it but there are democrats. Would have been nice to have a hunting club or rifle club in high school.

The days of school rifle clubs any place died 20-25 years ago. Between school shootings , title 9, & insurance. Districts no longer do the sport.

GREAT IDEA !!!!..... May I suggest you write a letter to the Board of Education or actually go to one of their monthly meetings. Doing it this way is avoiding a close minded Principal that can shoot down your idea for little or no reason, before it gets off the ground. You will also show the board that you are serious about this and they in turn will take you more seriously. Growing up has taught me that the "Squeaky Wheel gets the Grease" Meaning the board will be forced to listen and take your idea seriously. They have more power and influence than any close minded Principal or Vice Principal.Good Luck either way!
