The most common thing is to be interested in what other people are doing, have done, etc. But more sophisticated minds enjoy more abstract concepts and may be bored by the varied antics of other humans, so we like to think about and discuss ideas.

Such as: do the words nubile, connubial and nuptials have the same root word, or are the "nup" and the "nub" roots different? Let's go look at some word books.....

Or, how can we determine the state of a substance if it's in a box and we cannot see it or touch it?

I've no doubt that Eleanor quoted the adage, but it has its origin in Greek thought. I cannot recall who first rang those changes, but I'm certain that it descends from Hellenic Greece.
