I just took my 2001 Toyota Corolla to Autozone and they said I need a new catalytic converter. I researched it and someone said that there is usually an "secret" warranty on emmissions parts. Where do I look? Who do I call? Help Me please.

It's not secret. It is actually in your warranty booklet. Aside from the usual 3 year 36K mile warranty, emission equipment has a separate warranty, usually something like 5 to 10 years. Just read through all the fine prints in your warranty booklet.

Toyota Emissions Warranty

There is no secret to Toyota warranties. You can do to any Toyota dealer service department and get any warranty information you need. You can also call any Toyota dealership you choose, and they should relay this information to you. Catalytic converters are covered by the Federal Emissions Warranty for 8 years/80,000 miles. So, as long as you haven't exceeded the 80,000 miles on your 2001 Corolla, the catalytic converter replacement will be coverred under warranty.

I am a warranty claims adjuster and the warranty is not a secret. It is a limited warranty, as far as if it is transferable to subsequent owners, but the Federal Government mandates that any vehicle sold for use in the contiguous 48 states, Hawaii, Alaska, Guam and all other U.S Territories, must carry a 8 year/ 80,000 mile warranty from the manufacturer on all emmissions components, including the ECM.

When you purchased your vehicle, you should've been given a bunch of booklets by the dealer. Besides the Owner's Manual and Passport to Performance (scheduled maintenance guide), you should've also received an "Owner's Warranty Information" booklet, which would outline the various warranty coverages for your vehicle and specific covered components for it.

http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/warranty/warranty.html

Federal Emission Coverage: Components under the federal emission defect warranty are covered for 36 months/36,000 miles and specified major emission control components are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles. Specified major emission control components under emission performance warranty are also covered for 8 years/80,000 miles. In addition, emission performance warranty is applicable for 24 months/24,000 miles in states and local jurisdictions that require a periodic EPA-approved inspection and maintenance program.

California Emission Control Coverage: In California and any other state that adopts California emission warranty provisions, performance warranty and defect warranty coverage is applicable for 36 months/50,000 miles, and specific control devices are covered for 7 years/70,000 miles.

Typically, the catalytic converter falls under the emission component category. (Definitely under the CA emission control components, not entirely sure for federal...) But you'll have to check your booklet to be sure.

You should call your local dealer for more information, or open a case with Toyota through their Customer Experience Center: http://www.toyota.com/about/contact/index.html
Phone: 800-331-4331 (see page for hours, or for the fax number or snail mail)

Usually the "secret" warranty isn't so secret - often it's one of the other normal warranties on the vehicle (other than the basic new car "bumper to bumper" ones, such as the Powertrain or Emissions warranties) that are often forgotten about. Sometimes it actually is an extended warranty on a specific component, that the owner may not have received or kept the notification letter about it, but is known about through a service campaign/recall, or maybe a TSB. An owner's group may be able to point you to more specific information if one of the latter ones.

Emission items like the cat converter are covered under an extended warranty---8 yr/80,000 mile, I believe (see your owner's manual) which any dealer or Toyota customer service can explain to you. The warranty only covers items if they are defective and not damaged or abused.

You should call the local dealership regarding any warranty questions. I believe the federal government mandated an eight year eighty thousand mile warranty. If this applies you will probably have to let your local toyota dealership diagnois your concern to determine if it really is your catalytic converter. If it is not covered you will probably be charged a diagnostic charge. i hope this helps.
