We are looking to have around 150 guests. The wedding reception is near alexandria so we would like to keep the ceremony near that same area. The wedding is scheduled for October of 2008. If possible we would like to have the cermony in a church.

Neither of us are active members of a church. My fiancee was raised Catholic and I was raised Christian. If possible we would like to not have to join the church, but it's not a must. We do not want to promise to raise our kids in a certain religion.

I'm a Catholic in Alexandria, but am actually getting married out of state. We faced a similar problem, in that we obviously weren't members of a church in that state. However, most of the churches we called would let us have it at their church if we used one of their priests.

As I'm sure you're aware, if you don't want to promise to raise your kids a certain religion, you can cross Catholic churches off your list of potential ceremony sites. Not sure which denomination you are, but Protestant churches typically don't make promises about your kids. They may be more strict about being members of the church than Catholics are, though.

I don't know anything about the area you are in, but the clerk of whatever court that issues the marriage licenses where you live can advise you on a justice of the peace or other officer of the court who is authorized to perform the ceremony. You can just arrange that with him or her directly once you get your venue set up.

I totally understand about not wanting to feel tied to any particular organized religion.

Check out Unitarian Universalist churches or a nondenominational one.
