has anyone installed gimp?
I tried the installer and it does not seem to work

I also looked at the regular downloads

I am running win xp

can anyone help?

Because GIMP was originally designed for computers that don't run Windows you will need to install the "GIMP Tool Kit" or GTK first so that it runs properly on Windows. You can get this from the first link below.

Once you have installed the GTK (it's 5.9 MB in size), download the latest version of GIMP for Windows (version 2.2.17 - 7.7 MB) from the second link below.

Once you have everything installed make sure you check out the on-line version of "Grokking the GIMP" it will greatly help you learn to use the GIMP (the third link below)

Step 1, install the GTK Runtime environment:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gtk%2B-2.10.13-setup.exe
Step 2, install Gimp for windows:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-2.2.17-i586-setup.exe

Did you install the gtk framework first as the site instructs. If not it will not load.

I thought GIMP was a linux based program.

that might be why I don't belive it was intended for WiNDOWS
