The Old Testament talks about piercing being wrong, a pagan custom that was associated with pagan worship.
Tatoos are in the same category.

I heard this kind of thing while growing up, related to ear piercing and tattoos. The reasoning behind it is the prohibition in the Old Testament against cutting the body in worship of gods other than the one true god. So intent enters into it, though the people who believe it's a sin don't care about intent. Make your decision based on what tradition you're in and how much grief you're prepared to endure.

I don't think so. I do know that in the old days, when you had a tummy ache, the advice was to rub a little Vicks vaporub on the belly button. It seemed to work. SO maybe, there is a reason not to mess with your belly button. It could be a whole lot of bellyaching later.

I believe there are 5 key Scripture verses that need to be grouped together to get what God's opinion may really be on this issue. I will go ahead and run them all together, and then comment on how I feel they may be shedding some light on this very controversial issue.
"You shall not make ANY CUTTINGS IN YOUR FLESH for the dead, nor TATTOO ANY MARKS on you: I am the Lord" (Leviticus 19:28)
"Do NOT think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did NOT come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." (Matthew 5:17-18)
"Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16)
"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's." (1 Corinthians 6:19)
"If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are." (1 Corinthians 3:17)
I believe that when you put all 5 of these verses together, one right next to the other, and then study what the Lord is trying to tell you in these verses, I believe it is possible to pick up what God's opinion may be on this controversial issue.

"sins" are as varied as religions and sects. For example: In some religions it's a sin to cut your hair. Others it's a sin to show the bottom of your foot. Others (used to be) its a sin to eat meat on Friday (but not any more(?))
Sins are generally defined by those hoping to provide a "guidance system" to an honest, ethical, and spiritual life.

Actually in the OT it says that marking your body with writings, (tats), piercings, and other forms of mutilation are evil. This was the OT, and I personally don't have any tats or piercings, well... my ears, but that is it... I guess it is one of those things that you personally have to decide.... If you are o.k. with it, and can justify it to God, when it is your judgement day, I don't think he is going to not let you into heaven, if you love Jesus and gave your life and heart to him! We all sin, God says one sin is the same as all.... so, if it is a sin, and we know murder is, and lying, and stealing, then yes, we are all sinners, piercing or not.... God Bless!

Yes, it is a sin. The belly button is where your soul is injected at birth. If you pierce it then it leaks out. That's the same as suicide. Pierce one inch higher or six inches lower and you'll be fine. Really fine.

If you believe as the Bible says to not defile the body as it is a temple unto the Lord it would be a sin.
If you don't believe the scriptures it is still a sin--and a bad choice to make.

Stupid, but not necessarily a sin. The reason for doing it might be a sin. Doing it against parental consent would be a sin.

It's only a sin if you have a big fat flabby belly hanging over your belt wearing a belly shirt and then getting it pierced.
The sin of bad fashion sense ;)
