My Male German Shepard, Diesel, is about 10 months old. I just got him in July. He is going to the vet in a couple of weeks to be neutered.... Should i have his dew claws removed right away? The previous owner told me his are not as normal dew claws are- his are attached to his bone so it will need to be surgically removed. Any advice for me????

It does not seem to bother the dog at all, but i have a lab also and im concerned with them playing, what happens if he accidently gets one broke off? will it cause him pain and be worse to deal with then?

Dew claws are in the back feet.

It is common practice in many breeds to remove the dew claws 2-4 days after birth. It should be done by a vet, who can use sterile instruments and prescribe an antibotic. Most dew claw removal is bloodless and painless. Vet uses nexabond skin glue to close the skin after dew claw is removed. Dew claws are removed as they tend to get catch on clothes and other things later in life. They also reduce the amount of nails that need to be cut. Dew claw nails are sometimes very difficult to cut in an adult dog. Please re-read this last sentence... this dog is considered an adult dog at 10 months and this surgery is rather unnecessary and VERY painful for older dogs.... if the only reason to remove the claws is to stop his paws from catching on clothes---TEACH HIM NOT TO JUMP on people.... I know I had a couple of toe nails ripped out by a pair of surgical pliers and it HURT LIKE HELL for DAYS can't imagine a dog going through THAT much pain for practically NO REASON!!!

With the German Shepherd breed, you do not need to remove dew claws from the front at all. You do not need to remove front dew claws for showing either. If he has rear dew claws then I would say, Yes have them removed. If his front dew claws are bothersome at all to him or if he uses them to the point where he is scratching up his face, then remove them. Otherwise, there is no need to have the front dew claws removed from a GSD.
Julie D. you better ask your vet about your statement with rear dew claws!!!! They are commonly removed from dogs!!
OK with rear dew claws on a Shepherd I would have them removed then during the neuter. Rear dew claws are a gene that is dominant in the breed. So one of his parents must of had them. I have never had any in a litter, but if this happens, they should be snipped off at birth on those pups.

You didn't say if the claws were on the front or back legs. If they are on the back legs, it would be like having a finger amputated. Most vets would never do this. The front dews could be removed but you would probably have 3-5 stitches. Although I hate front dews, I wouldn't have it done at this age. If it were a breed that was having it's ears cropped at the same time at 10 weeks, I would, but not at 10 mos.

No, don't do it. One of my pups came with dew claws at 4 months old. Both the vet and the groomer told me not to do it, it's very painful if not done by the breeder early. Why bother anyway if you aren't showing or hunting?

they don't need to be removed if you're not going to show him. My dog still has her dew claws, and she uses them almost like thumbs when she's playing with her toys. So long as they're not dangling on by a piece of small flesh, just leave it be.

since it is attached to the bone. The best advice would be from someone who has seen the x-rays. Dogs normally have them removed because they do get caught on things and cause unnecessary pain. In this case you have to find out what is going to be more pain full. Good Luck.

All three of my dogs still have their dew claws. I have had the oldest dog for nine years and I have never had a problem with them. Even when we cut them. And I cut them myself.

Rear dewclaws are many times bumped off no longer basically because of the fact they might get caught on some thing yet additionally because of the fact micro organism can advance around it. looking on how previous he's determines whether or no longer they'll would desire to sugically do away with them by way of pitt mixture became 6 months previous while they bumped off hers they did it on an analogous time she became spayed.

If it doesn't bother his daily activities, you can leave it. At this age, it is true that you need to remove them surgically.

no they are not needed to be removed. they might be bothersome as a puppy, but he will get used to them. it is merely an extra nail used for climing, since they are origanally from the hills of Germany. Good LUck!
