The dentist just told me today that I have to get braces. MY teeth are perfectly straight, but I have a small gap in between my two front teeth and I have an overbite. How long will I have to wear braces? Can I chew gum?

The orthodontist can give you an approximate length of time. You'll be surprised at how quickly they move. I'm 36 and have had braces since Dec. (I know, what a midlife crisis, huh). I can chew gum but only sugar free. Flossing is the only headache. If you're young (under 20) you teeth will usually move pretty fast. The older you get the slower they move. Good luck.

You probably won't have to wear braces for as long as my daughter did (2 years) because your problems are different from hers. She had an open bite, which really messed up her mouth. She would not have had to wear braces for as long as she did if she had followed the orthodontist's instructions properly. I know braces aren't pleasant but you will get them off sooner if you do follow those instructions.

My guess is maybe a year. While orthodontists advise against it, you can chew gum.

generally, the time frame for orthodontic treatment is two years. follow your dentist's instructions and keep practicing good oral hygiene (brush and floss regularly, eat healthy).

gum might stick to the wires and brackets...may loosen or damage them. so if you can avoid chewing gum while you're under orthodontic treatment, please do so...

A SLIGHT OVERBITE IS PRESENT IN OVER 90%OF THE ADULT POPULATION. IT ENABLES YOU TO BITE INTO LETTUCE AND SPINACH.
AS FAR AS THE GAP IS CONCERNED, SEVERAL FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE THEM. SOPHIA LOREN, SIR LAURENCE OLIVER, AND THERE ARE MANY OTHERS.
IF IT DOESN'T BOTHER YOU, LEAVE IT ALONE.
