Jack - the Doctor
Kate - the criminal that was being transported,
was really good and helpful.
Sayid- a very hands on, skillful person.
Charlie- the druggie. Once he got off the
drugs ( thanks to Locke ) he was very helpful,
most of all to the pregnant Claire.
Locke, and Sawyer - could be helpful...
could be.
The money Guy was helpful.

In my opinion the protagonists in the first few episodes were: Jack Shephard, John Locke, and Sayid Jarrah.

Any character who has more than one line, basically. Jack, Kate, Charlie, Sayid, John. The only antagonist in the first few episodes is the monster thing.
