My theory is that the soul is not made of ordinary matter, so OF COURSE we can't detect it.

Do you think science will ever be able to detect the soul using scientific instruments?

We cannot detect the tooth fairy either, but I doubt you believe in one.

How is your belief in a soul any different?

Further, you don't have a theory. You don't even have a hypothesis.

A theory is based on an abundance of evidence against alternatives. There is no such evidence against alternatives to souls. Technically, it's not even a hypothesis because it is not based on observations of the naturalistic world.

You have a guess, at best.

Who says this is so? For any scientific instrument to be able to detect something, the designer needs, at the very least, a theory as to what the target is comprised of and how it interacts with known phenomena. As there is no current theory for what a soul is and thus no guide as to the predictable behavior of such a thing, no instrument can be designed to detect it. If you have such a theory, talk to some physicists and design your own detector....then let us know what you discover.

Why can't they detect love with instruments? Maybe love doesn't exist.
I think terms like soul and spirit are tossed around with the speaker having absolutely no idea what the definitions are themselves, they just say these words because they believe the hopeful messages and those messages come with vague references to the soul and spirit.

To detect soul you need Musical Instruments.

Play said instruments in the vicinity of James Brown.

Probably not,in terms of physical law. But in terms of analysis it is already possible to demonstrate levels of consciousness that operate independently of the cerebral apparatus and the senses. Precognition is now a heavily documented fact, but it certainly cannot be explained in terms of physical law, including biology. An analytical approach is more appropriate to the study of thought and behavior than "instruments" in any event.
