MPEG-1 is an international standard for compressing audio and video.
The audio standard is split into 3 layers
MPEG-1 Layer 1 is the simplest layer (and easier to code)
MPEG-1 Layer 2, is the one most commonly used in VCD movies or DVD movies that actually have MPEG audio.
MPEG-1 Layer 3, is the most complex, but also provides the best quality; this is also known as MP3
