I think you should listen to your vet. The effects of not using a muzzle will be euthanasia after biting someone.

You do not want him to bite somebody, so if you muzzle him when taking him out, use a basket muzzle, as they allow the dog to open its mouth, pant, drink...
But the dog may not accept the muzzle at first. Feed him treats while you have the muzzle right in front of him so he starts to associate it with something good, and then you can slowly work with him at wearing it, still giving him treats and rewards.
You may also want to look into an obedience class. But before you go with a trainer, you should talk to different trainers in the area to see about their techniques and experience.

I think it all depends on why your dog snaps. Is this happening at the vet? If so, your vet may be asking you to keep your dog restrained so he doesn't get bit. If this happens all the time, he may be trying to protect you from a law wuit.
However, your vet is a vet, not a dog trainer. The two don't often go hand in hand. You should probably consult a trainer before resorting to something so drastic as a muzzle.

Use a basket muzzle (not one of those cloth ones that hold the mouth shut) when going out in public - fit it so he can open his mouth & pant. IF you google "greyhound kennel muzzle' you can find some inexpensive comfortable muzzles ( greys even can drink through them) From personal experience- (I do a dog sport that requires muzzles) it does NOT make a non- agressive dog agressive doubt it;d harm one that already is..
PS remember they have to be TAUGHT to wear a muzzle - start holding it on his nose for ONE second "oh good dog: and gradually lenghten time.
Also look into a GOOD obedience class- some instrustors can work miracles.

Muzzling him is the best thing to do when walking him, but you're not getting to the root of the problem. How do you discipline him when he is exhibiting agressive behavior? How are the people he snaps at approaching him? Does he have any history of abuse? Is he fixed? Has he been through any obedience training? Muzzling is a quick fix for an agressive dog, and can help for short periods of time. In the long run, if you want to keep your dog, you should seek behavioral counseling to determine whether the agressive outbursts are result of fear or another emotion, and get him into obedience training ASAP. In addition, neuter him immediately if he hasn't been already.

I don't think it makes a dog more aggressive, but remember to follow the directions and only leave it on your dog for the time recommended. If you dog is snapping at people you need to be a responsible owner and put a muzzle on him when he is around other people.
good luck!

Muzzles should be used for a short amount of time only, like when you're going on walks, etc.
If you have visitors to your home, I suggest kenneling your dog while you enjoy your company.
